...hanging by the right hand chassis member just ahead of the rear wheel? It has pipes on it and an electrical connector. I only ask because its bracket has rusted of and I noticed it dangling down the other day! It's now back in place with a hefty cable tie, but I just wondered what it was. Some kind of fuel pump?

Thanks. It's very small though - maybe about the size of a cotton reel? Surely to goodness there can't be a pump and filter in there? (It already has another couple of filters in the engine bay)!

Our previous X-Trail had a "saddle" tank, over the propshaft, so they fitted a little "transfer pump" to suck petrol out of the half with the fuel filler neck connected to it, and chuck it into the half with the fuel pump in it. Might it be one of those?

its usually inside the main pump/filter housing

That still sounds odd. I'm not sure we're talking about the same bit here. I've attached a photo of the bit in question. Does that ring any bells?

Yes it looks like the fuel burning heater pump, it usually resides behind the OS rear wheel arch liner.

Ah! Thanks. So "FBH" is "Fuel Burning Heater"?

Thanks for the photos too. I can recognise the "lump" in them and it does seem to be in its original place, on a plastic bracket on the side of the chassis. I've now found a photo of it in the Haynes manual, so that confirms it!

I haven't pulled the wheelarch liner down to see the other components though. The question then, is what are they? I can see something that looks like a pump and a filter, but if they're not for the FBH, what are they for? Also the small black pot with some sort of drain tube at the bottom? The Haynes manual isn't much help if you don't know what something is called!

The large pump is the low pressure (LP) pump for the engine, and the filter is the fuel filter.
Are these just open and hanging, or are they in the plastic tray they are fixed to, just in front of the rear wheel?

That's the fuel sedimenter, where water and other large particulates collect. It should be drained every oil change.;)
