TD4MES

Hi all,

I've got a TD4 Freelander 1 Commercial.
I've only had id about a month and I've been slowly replacing, cleaning, improving it's running over that time.
It's been running pretty well since I did the EGR bypass but I have noticed grey and black smoke from the exhaust (grey when colder and not boosting, black when I put my foot down)

Anyway.. today I backed it off a customer's driveway and there was a black puddle under the engine!
I got it home and I've popped the bonnet and found a right mess!

I've got engine oil sprayed all over the left hand side of the engine and ancillaries (left as you look at the engine)

I've attached a couple of photos.

I've got it booked in for a general check-up with a local independent Landrover specialist next Thursday but I can't even drive it in this condition!

Anyone got any ideas what the problem is?

I have ordered the BMW crank case filter replacement and a full set of silicone hoses because I think these will help with the smoke issue.

Now I just need to find out why it's spitting black stuff all over the place!!!!

Any help would be much appreciated!
Dave

No photo's.
Probably coming out of the dip stick due to a blocked crankcase filter.
Mike

Thanks Mike.

I hope you're right and that's all it is. The oil seems to be mostly on the left though and the dip-stick is at the front.
Well hopefully my new crankcase filter will be here tomorrow so I can swap it and find out!

Reading through some other threads it sounds as though sometimes it can be from the intercooler or turbo oil lines? where is the turbo located on the TD4?

Cheers

Another thought...
If it's burning oil and spraying out of the bloody dipstick hole why have I not had an oil level warning light come on? Is there one?

because the relative amount of oil sprayed will be feck all. It looks like alot, but it aint.

is there a screw in the hole on the left hand side of the engine cover as the hole goes right through into the rocker cover and thats where it looks like the oil is coming from in your picture.

OK I think I have my answer!

The Engine cover bolt was not done up! I didn't realise that this went right through!?

I am going to replace all my hoses soon so I will clean everything up and check for any signs of leaks elsewhere but hopefully this was all it was.

Thanks for all the help guys! I hope that once I've tinkered with the car a little bit more I will be able to contribute to these sorts of questions too!

I was caught out by that screw when I was servicing the engine and left the cover off to try it out.
