It's a Diesel runaway.

Usually caused by the Turbo seals going sucking the oil from the sump through the engine. The engine just runs to destruction.

So is there general maintenance that should be done to the turbo to prevent it? Always been wary of messing about with them :( heard some horrors of them breaking an bits going into engine an knackin it but never this.

We had a daf 85 do it where I work they put it down to the fact that the driver thrashed it from cold and instant shutdown when he stopped

This link was interesting Brian thanks for that. Plan to have fire extinguisher in mine when I finally get it back on the road. Every days a schooday :D

Hows that gonna work then - apart from filling the engine with water/foam/dry powder (take yo pick)?

I would imagine he means a CO2 extinguisher, no oxygen = no combustion.

big sharp knife would be better -
cut the output from the turbo to inlet manifold = no air or oil going in then,
just to make sure stuff a lump of rag in the inlet pronto.

but by then the motor would be fooked anyway....

I would go with the rag option myself.

I wouldn't know what to do.

Sharp exit probably :(

lol.....my mrs would say she never done it,
my eldist daughter would try and stall it,
my youngist daughter would get out, slam the door and say (feckit) its not mine anyway...:D
my son would run a mile with all the smoke billowing - hates smoke =
serious house fire when he was just 4 yo..
but laugh at it till it went pop...:D:D:D

but they ALL would say,
bout time you got rid of that and bought a new one.. :(

Don't overfill the engine oil - had a work colleague who had an oil level sensor failure on a Seat, light came on, didn't check the dipstick, just poured a litre of oil in the engine. Started it up and it lunched itself. Seat weren't very helpful.......
