Its true though :p the doors don't shut properly on the series 3 and the vent flaps are ****e compared!
The doors don't shut properly is down to user maintenance, not the build. Can't pass comment on the vents, Ive never used them.

Anyway the series one barely has any bloody doors

Once again I've learned something from you James, I had assumed the changeover (imo a crucial/fundamental change but not many seem to care!) came about with the introduction of the Ninety/One Ten. Would be interesting to pinpoint the actual year, maybe via owners on here? I did write to James Taylor about it when he was at LRO (I think) but they didn't pick up on it.. LRO was so littered with incorrectly captioned photos and duff info I soon stopped buying it anyway though so maybe they've since covered it...?

my father bought a new series in 76 and it was reasonably well built ,he bought another new one in 81 ,chassis rotted within 6 years amongst much other stuff it was a complete landy build course in one vehicle, but neither had the thickness of panel or quality of steel for chassis as the 58 2a he also had, its well know chassis rot was an issue on any series after 1980

I had a '66 S2a and a friend had a S3 (I forget the model year) and I know they both had full thickness panels because we used to take the pee out of another mate's Ninety which had puddles on the wing tops when it rained where they'd been leant on during maintenance.. I'm intrigued now :scratching_chin:

my 1975 S3 is in better condition than the 90 I've got in for welding too :p the chassis on the 90 is made from more patches than original steel!

read this..
so i go back to m post of my 1991 disco 200 is better.
in the 3 months i spent under it, not a splatter of weld on any chassis part needed..
it was the bits connecting to the chassis plus sill, behind the front lights, and bumper ends being plastic tat that needed doing..
6 years later, living next to the sea, only can see the near side sill box section lower part needs doing for mot...
chassis is still just fine....

have got some spotty bits breaking out round the rear wheel arch near side...
bloody salty puddles..

I cant say much about factory build quality as my series was rebuilt once before me or my granddad had it :D And not brilliantly either, the bulkhead isnt square, it sits about 2" further forward on one side than the other :D

I like the simplicity of the older land rovers, far far easier to work on than the TD5 my dad has

I have to go with the Puma version as I've got one on order!

I see the point about it not being as easy to work on as the older ones, and I'm amazed by some of the build threads on here. But I have neither the space nor the time nor the skill to do that kind of thing (much as I wish I did) so I guess it's going to have to be proper enough for me :)

Series 1, it was the downfall once they started to put door handles on the outside!

nearly at the end of the ones that i've owned....suspect that i'm going to say that the last one is the best!
