I'm just considering replacing the blown 2.5td in my 89 110 with a 200TDI. I'm by no means an expert so will need someone to do it for me.

Can anyone make suggestions on any of the following points:

At what point does the mileage on a secondhand 200TDI start to look too much?

What should i look out for when it's running?

What kind of prices should I be looking at for the engine?

What kind of price is reasonable for fitting?

Thanks for your help

Hi

Loads of threads on this one if you search, with options around buying engine alone or buying MOT fail donor Disco, takign what you need and selling what remains to claw some cash back.

Also loads of advice on DIY, but if you wish to pay someone about 10 hours labour is a figure I recall reading somewhere.

If you go for a 200 TDi it's going to be older. Mileage is one variable, but how it's been used and looked after is perhaps more relevant.

A 300 TDi might be easier to source and a better long term choice?

In terms of overall costs, believe guys have picked up old Discos for around £500. Understand anything from £1,200 - £2k for the 'whole job done' to be a reasonable budget guide

Engine running checks - excessive smoking, strange noises, cylinder head, over heating, turbo working

Make sure there isnt loads of blue smoke on start up, remove the oil filler cap and make sure it isnt breathing to heavy, Steve parker does lots of conversion parts i have seen some of his stuff it looks really good and leaves abetter finnish than chopped about pipe work.
What about trying it your self ? you can hire engine hoists

I'd second doing-it-yourself. I did mine this time last year - I'd never attempted anything like it before, but after reading all the excellent threads on here, I felt confident enough to have a go. Seriously, if a mechanical numpty like me can do it, (almost) anyone can!

Very tempted to try myself after all your suggestions. I'm also in the process of renovating a house, so I've kind of got my work cut out right now!
