Hi all.

I am looking at making a purchase. Wanting a 2nd car to use through winter to save me commuting in snow on the motorbike!

I am looking at a 2001 Freelander V6 Auto with 79,000 miles. Looks mint from the outside and from what I can see through the windows. Salesman couldn't let me look inside because a customer had inadvertantly walked off with the keys (a likely story!!)

We are going back to view to car on Monday and would appreciate any advice on common faults with them and what to look out for and check. It's also got an LPG conversion which was done 2 years ago and has receipts etc.

Cheers

Freelander + LPG = disaster waiting to happen!!

Don't touch it!

Walk away!

(btw I'm a 2001 V6 Petrol Freelander owner ....... listen to me!! I sorta know what I'm talking about :p)

Please search this forum for HGF (head gasket failure) relating to 1.8 and 2.5 litre petrol engines Freelander 1's before you consider going back to see it. Only consider a Freelander 1 if it comes with the BMW diesel engine. Even if you do, make sure that the prop shaft hasn't been removed! A vendor will normally say that this has been done for fuel economy reasons (if they admit to it at all), but it's usually done to cover up very expensive mechanical failure.

Best check the stickies on the Freelander section of this Forum for all the vital information that you're going to need.

Tigger.

The most important thing to check is round the back. There is a little badge which says "freelander" on all the ones you need to avoid. If the model you are looking at has this decal, go and look at another land rover until you find one that doesn't have this warning sticker on it. You have been warned!

Spanner. Works. In. Etc.

Thanks for the replies.

I know the Freelander isn't regarded as being a "proper" off roader or a "proper" Landrover but I don't want to go off road! No interest in that at all I'm afraid. All I want is a 4x4 car that is comfy, warm, and will get me to work through all weather conditions (which the motorbike will be a bit risky on) ie ice, frost, snow, fog.

From what you've said and other stuff I've read on the net I am now reluctant to go for the V6 one I've seen, despite its apparent excellent condition from the outside. But a lot of people say that the TD4 is the best one to buy. Are they regarded as more reliable than the K series petrol ones? Any faults with them I need to look for?
