Hi all,

Really stuck at the moment my 90 currently has a 2.5 petrol and apart from its thirst I don't really have any issues other than it may be a bit lacking for some of the local hills. Recently it broke down and the coil shorted out, AA man reckoned it was the diff so I replaced it and consequently as I was rushing it the timing out. Now my fear for breaking down is getting to me again.

The bloke I got it from text me the other day and said he has a 300tdi disco engine he bought to recon and have as a spare, he's never heard it run so would need a service at least and hope for the best at the time of turning the key, said he wants £250. I really want to go down the TDi road for the extra efficiency (barely 20mpg with my petrol) and of course black smoke and turbo whistle :D

Shall I take up his offer of the 300, wait and buy a knackered old 200 disco which apparently migrated Devon long ago, or just fix my little petrol?

Sorry for whining a bit just feel as though I would have been better off with a V8 for fun factor and economy at the minute.

Cheers for any replies in advance.

Lloyd

That's what I thought but it could be a while til a decent 200 comes up anywhere near enough to make it worth having. Have heard that if all goes smoothly you can drive a petrol in the morning and 200 by night.

Just sick of holding a petrol pump for longer than every pound gets me.

I'm running a 2.5 petrol owned it for 8 years and would consider a diesel replacement, but only when my petrol is totally goosed.replaced the cylinder head last year and still runs sweet .the issue with replaceing is if you don't know the engine what's to say its any better than what you have?

Yea that's why I would want a running complete disco ideally. I do like the 2.5 petrol quite a bit but I'm not sure if its just as its my first car. I can deal with the lack of power but recently it's just getting worst and pinking like a bi&ch at the minute. So I've left it parked up and will tend to her needs tomorrow.

I just like diesels, loved mums Audis, love the noise, the torque and obviously the slightly 'agricultural' sound of a great big diesel turbo whistling and ****ing black smoke all over the place on a straight pipe.

Out of interest what's the mileage on your landy?and when you say under powered what sort of speeds are you getting?does it fire up first time?

Mileage around 103,000 can get 50-60 on most flats after a long time, had over 70 down hill. Fires up lovely first turn of the key every morning with a big puff of not so good blue smoke.

Yeah mine fires first time on the button and is on 110,000 miles, will get up to 60 no probs and will push 70 on a good day lol ,

A 200 tdi will give you the same sort of performance , and a lot of noise to go with it , for a little bit more fuel economy .Plus its gonna cost you to change to diesel. The puff of blue on start up is telling you the valve guide seals need doing . You dont even need to take the head off to do that . Try and get more mech skills and the petrol will then be set up properly and will also be more economical. JMHO

ps I take it you mean the dizzy not the diff ?

Yea was the dizzy not the diff, stupid iPad auto spell.

Surely the extra torque from the tdi and an extra 30 ish horsepower isn't the same sort of performance? I'm not asking for a rocket ship just something less thirsty. I just would like to know if I should buy the 300 and risk it being okay but not knowing until I turn the key? Or wait and hope that a 200 pops up somewhere close still within its disco.

Mechanical skills aren't really an issue spent 3 years at college learning automotive repair to level 3. But they never taught us anthing about old style ignition as obviously with anything made with in the last 10 years plus which is all they seem to think you will be working on. Only has a coil pack to replace and let the ecu sort the rest out.

Sorry if I sounded a bit ****ty I didn't mean to. :behindsofa:

didnt notice anything :)

I would go with what YOU want to end up with , as at the end of the day its you thats got to drive about in it . If you go diesel then get a rotten disco complete, then you can use whatever you need , and in the long run it will be quicker and cheaper . Just sell of what you dont want and recoup a bit from that as well. You will also be able to actually prove the engine and trans , not rely on a dubious strangers opinion.

Thank you very much. Will try and find a nice rotten disco ;)
