Some do some don't up to the individual. Some members have been told no increase others have been quoted large premium increases. As it is a modification you should inform your insurer and your insurance could be void if you don't, your choice.

the instructions for the '2a' mention that it's possible to use settings 1-5 with a pierburg maf .. if an egr delete/bypass is fitted ..

since fitting the pierburg maf .. i've been using '10' ..
but have struggled to get better than 39mpg ..
don't know if it's the stronger maf signal .. or winter temps. .. or both ..

with the bosch maf .. i was getting over 40 mpg easily .. on setting '5' ..

now have been trying '5' with the pierburg maf ..
motor runs fine :) ..
power wise there doesn't seem to be that much difference .. overall ..
in fact it's hard to tell IF there's a power difference ..

measured distance uphill full throttle charges .. in 5th gear .. result in same terminal speed ..
( i.e. mph noted at peak of hill )

not checked mpg yet with a fillup ..

but ..
after brimming the tank ..
previous mileage when the fuel-gauge needle moved off 'full' was 150 or slightly more ( bosch maf .. synergy on '5' )
with the pierburg .. less than 150 was the norm. ( synergy on '10' )
today .. saw it move off 'full' at 177 miles .. ( pierburg maf .. synergy on '5' )

still been driving as in winter temps .. ac/demist 'on' ..
and letting it idle with cab heater 'on' whilst having a coffee by the side of the road ..

next fillup i'll know for sure if the change over has benefited mpg ..

~~~~~~~~
btw: i've Not got the synergy cab-switch fitted ..
Mines on 6 with Pierburg MAF and in cab switch on green, might try without the Synergy and with the original Bosch MAF in case the Synergy is worsening the mpg.
5, and....I'm in mondo . Wheel spin and tc at roundabouts baby! Have the dash switch but its a new toy so it's been on 'cheeky' all week!
when i first got my 'new-toy' .. i over estimated the acceleration potential on two 'overtaking' occasions .. ended up feeling quite stupid and angry with self ..
soon realised it was no match for many other vehicles of various types 'n sizes :)
and .. it's still a comparatively weighty vehicle .. and takes a fair amount of brake power to stop it from speed ..
after a couple of months of synergy 'fun' .. i measured the tread on my new pirelli's ..
.. Gulp !! .. ..
now days i be thinking .. it's Me who's paying for tyres .. clutch .. fuel .. 'n other 'wear and tear' .. .. not so right-foot enthusiastic now ..
@ brim up today .. 44 mpg :)
318.5 miles / 32.9 liters .. via 'MPG Calc' app.
Horses for courses I suppose. Problem, or otherwise, is that I only do journeys of between 5 & 6 miles and only fill up about once every 2/3months. I also like the increased power/acceleration that comes with the Synergy so more than happy to have decreased mpg for better performance.
Horses for courses I suppose.
true :)
~~~~~~~~~~

post 25 .. was just me reporting on an experiment .. for general hippo forum info

i did once try the 'eco' settings via the cab-switch ( hooked up in engine bay )
but didn't like the resulting performance ..

i didn't expect setting '5' when using a pierburg maf to work particularly well either ..
was suprised at the result ..

stands to reason .. if the torque/power performance is similar as setting '10' ..
but with much better mpg .. .. then smoke particle emissions must be less ..
( obviously cannot confirm without a proper emissions test ..
( and i can only judge 'performance' by feel .. without resorting to a rolling-road bhp test ..

~ ~ ~

so in theory .. for similar performance .. less carbon soot be building up internaly ..
which can only be a good thing for the engine ..

more so if one were to drive only short journeys , when the engine don't reach optimum temp.
and the carbon'soot doesn't get a chance to get burnt off & blown out the exhaust ..

( although i guess it would depend how those short trips were driven ..

~~~~~~~~
thinking about it .. rekon there be a chance of even more power .. and better mpg .. from setting '10' .. .. if the engine injection timing was remapped ..
'n ..
as stated .. was just me reporting the result of an experiment :)
Previous threads have suggested that using either setting 5 (Bosch) or setting 10 (Pierburg) can shorten the injector life, perhaps other Synergy users can advise if this is correct. I tend to use the in cab power setting when I get the urge to pass everything else in front of me (safely of course) unfortunately, as there are no Motorways in Cornwall, this is quite infrequent.
Previous threads have suggested that using either setting 5 (Bosch) or setting 10 (Pierburg) can shorten the injector life
rings a bell :) .. i.e. reading some prev. threads ..
although .. r.rons box is supposed to work with safe system-pressure limits ..
and .. most h.p.- pump .. and injector wear/faults be caused by dirt/water in fuel
and / or lack of fuel lubrication properties ( a.f.a.i.k. )
though it makes sense not to over-do use of higher fuel pressures as well :)
~~~~~

anyways ..

i did some reading on how the maf sensor influences the fuel delivery ..
seems like it works via injector-pulse-open-close timespan ..

makes sense to use wider pulse timing with lower fuel pressure ..
less pressure stress on pump and injectors

so for now have gone back to the pierburg section ..
and using a lower torque/power setting

feels a tad better at the lower rpm range ..
i.e. with regards to manual gear-shifting ..
with the 'low' maf compensation section ..
was as if rpm would drop too quick .. resulting in a less-than-perfect gearchange ..
( something like that :)

~~~~~~~~
i need to get the cab switch installed :-/
( edit 1st june 2013 ..
on '10' 'n probably staying there
new driving shoes give uber fine control over go-pedal :)
hiya
hope u guys can help plse, ive got a synergy with a 3 way switch and bosch maf fitted, got it set on number 2 , but mine isnt the updated one and have to stop the engine, flick the switch before the new setting takes place
after reading this am i right in saying then if i put the toggle switch in the centre with no leds lit , it will provide in the maximum amount of mpg please
as mine is the older type , when in the centre position does that mean the synergy box is off completely or still uses the settings on the box
plus is it better to set the maf compensator off or on please
would u say since changing to a pierburgh maf did ur mpg greatly increase or didnt u notice much difference plse
going at a later date get mine updated
any help with this would as always be greatly received
thks as always guys
I have the later Synergy, where you can change the switch whilst on the move, and the Pierburg MAF. I usually leave the switch in the top position, with the green light on, and the Synergy set to 7 and only switch to the bottom position, red light on, when I need to fly. To be honest I haven't noticed much of a decrease in fuel consumption except perhaps 2 to 3 mpg improvement on a long run, which for me is a rare occasion. I believe that you only need the compensator on when you use the Pierburg MAF.
plus is it better to set the maf compensator off or on please
when i had the bosch maf fitted .. i'd always have the switch 'on'
simply cause IF it needs compensation .. it gets it ..
IF it don't need it .. it won't do any harm
would u say since changing to a pierburgh maf did ur mpg greatly increase or didnt u notice much difference plse
according to rover-ron's 'instruction leaflet'
the pierburg maf mapping is for 'performance' .. so potentialy can use more fuel
i rekon it's all down to how you drive ( other factors aside )
for me .. with the pierburg maf fitted .. it's been harder to achieve good mpg ..
but IF i'm careful with the go-pedal .. i can get good results ..
( i .. as of yet don't have the dash switch installed .. not sure that i ever will )
btw: IF the 'egr' has been deleted .. then .. with the pierburg maf fitted
it's possible also to use synergy settings 1 thru 5 ( i.e. the bosch maf settings )
as well as settings 6 thru 10 ..
the maf signal mapping .. in essence .. determines the length of time the injectors stay 'open' .. .. weaker signal equals short injection time ..
the bosch maf settings 1 thru 5 .. give a slightly weaker signal than the pierburg maf settings 6 thru 10 .. .. ( obviously the maf switch needs to be 'on' )
btw: the injection timespan is aslo related to the air-intake temp sensor ..
~~~~~~

that's my understanding of 'how-it-works' ..
( i may be wrong :)

thks for the info, will turn my maf compensator on , but since swapping over to another bosch maf it seems alot better, smoother, more responsive and hardly any smoke

on start up it smokes a bit, like all diesels do, then after a few minutes its gone

just seems to be a different beast al together, will brim the tank soon and then see what i get mpg wise

been looking on the hawkeye to see if it gave the maf readout so i could compare it with rons web site but cant find it

thks again

Bought a Pierburg MAF from Ron on special offer a year or two ago to go with my Synergy 2 . However the vehicle just wouldn't run with it fitted. Ron offered advice and said if it still didn't run, to send it back. It didn't, and I didn't (send it back I mean). Managed to get a brand new Bosch MAF for £17 off a woman who bought it in error.
I have a massive intercooler, silicone hoses, egr mod and the BMW Cyclone filter fitted. There's no turbo lag, but I still don't believe I am getting the best from it. I've also just had to replace an injector. It runs better now but still not as good as when I fitted the old, one switch version I used to have .
