Mine was bought when my company used to do weekend shows, nearly always ****ed down which meant my Alfa 156 and trailer (or caravan) would need towing off the muddy fields.
However since I stopped doing the shows we've considered going back to an estate car but the pros of the TD4 out weigh the negatives.
Currently it is doing a 90 mile daily commute on the M3 and will sit at 90mph quite happily (apart from the fuel it uses at that speed!), is good for family holidays, can carry my "on-call" kit in the boot and still be usable and most important of all, my son likes the fact he can see so much more out of the windows when we go somewhere.
Downsides, still forget its a 4x4 when responding (so roundabouts on occasion can be a little bouncy), fuel usage at speed and the brakes - never known a car (other than other land rovers) with such wooden feeling brakes - green stuff pads next.
I'd prefer a Discovery 3, but its too big, too much money and possibly a bit Jap looking.

Never wanted one. I was going to buy a discovery but mine came up cheap to a brought it. Now i realise its cheaper to run than a disco. Less rotten (only just) and the fact i dont REALLY need one that can tow 3.5t. The rare occasion i tow that much its not worth buying a a different car.
If i go down the caravan route (which will be a 26' roma) then i will need a disco.
For what i do - go down the odd lane and tow a horse box i dont really need a more manly 4x4 than what i got..although i would quite like a disco 4 in years to come.
I am going to look at another freelander today for the missus.

I've been driving LandRovers of all descriptions since around 1966 - both mine and other peoples.
Until I tried a Freelander they all had one or more of the following faults for long-term ownership.
Too bumpy / primitive
Too luxurious / expensive.
Too draughty and cold.
Too draughty and hot.
Too thirsty for other than short journeys.
First was a 1949 Series 1 - that was fun! All those levers and things - but no synchromesh! A great introduction. wish I still had it!
In Saudi Arabia I had a V6 engined 15 seater beast - only country I could afford to keep the thirsty thing in fuel!
I've driven just about every 4X4 that I could beg borrow or almost steal. Most non-LR fun was in a VW Iltis. Toyo jobs and other things from the 'Land of the Rising-Sun' are so impersonal,clinical and devoid of driver 'feel', they leave me cold.
My Freelander does everything I ask of it, bar climb trees, and as I can carry all my toys and tools in it - all over Europe in relative comfort whatever the weather - I love it - and all it's quirkiness.

The hippo is the first car of this kind I've got in my life, but I'm only 70 so who knows what I'll buy when I get my midlifecrisis??
Like it so much as my wife choose it, she loved it from the first sight she had on it, the comfort is phenomenal, before I had a Merc.190.E 2.l petrol and after 100 km my wife had backache, with the hippo we did trips of 500 kms with no pain at all. Furthermore it's a Td4 Steptronic, with airco (not the strongest one but enough) and as I've only done some 83.000 kms (new from january 9th 2001) I think (if no major pblms arise), as it fulfills all my needs perfectly, I am not going to change cars anymore. I'm glad with the higher seating position, the ease of getting in/out, the relax driving you have in it, the safety (even though it appears only to be an idea ??) and I especially like the relax driving in **** and snow in the winter, while others are cramped at their steeringwheel with white knuckels, with the hippo you just drive relax as it were a sunny summerafternoon. (And as in my signature shown one can do roadbooks with it).

my last car was a 2000 mgf vvc
Mine was a 1999 V Reg 1.8Mpi MGF, brilliant car had it from Jan 2004 to March 2011, The longest I ever owned any car sadly though it got a bit worn and was replaced with a 3 Door 1.8i Freelander so I still have a convertible K series vehicle
. I would have bought a defender but could not get one within the budget. Since Land Rover have discontinued the 3 door version of the Freelander it will get replaced with a Disco 3 if and when I can afford it

, but, it was a blessing in disguise as i got my f/l, had wanted 1 since i sold my old lwb maverick back in 2009, just could'nt afford 1 then, makes me smile every time i get in it
