Are you saying that reliability is what makes a Landrover ? or ease of repair?
Dispite the Oz saying "take a landrover to get you anywhere, but a Toyota to bring yu back again"?

Ease of repair, third world country style, sadly the electrical features that are on modern cars can be a pain in the arse-don't think there would be many faultmates etc in sub Saharan Africa.
Early vogues good in their time too

So no late 300TDi's deffo no TD5's, Discos,Rangies, Freelanders, Pumas etc? Thats a bit eliteist, isnt it?

To everyone it is summat different but yer disagreeing with all of everyone's points!!!

What do YOU (daft) think makes a landie then???

for me it's the distinctive shape of the series and defender. don't really give a toss what engine its got, who built it or where! you can see a silhouette of a landy and instantly know what it is, can't say that about many other vehicles, stick some of these modern cars in a row minus their badges and they could all be the same make!!

agree with sean but,

my personal opinion is,

Proper box section chassis,
Agricultural no bells and whistels engine,
no ecus
basic electric system were it will run with just the bare minimal without flashing dasboard and warning lights, about abs because it doesnt have it
things engaged my mechanical linkages
and british and made in england with as many english made parts as possible :)

and tough as old boots with a look that laughs at scratches

Sure as long as fully equipped support vehicle behind I'd go anywhere.

Failing that give me a vehicle that a man with a welder and large hammer can fix in the middle of nowhere.

Having watched the children playing in the Rangie section (too scared to join in).

What, in your opinion makes the "essence" of a "LandRover"?
Is it the name?
has it got to be built in Solihull?
has it got to have 4wd?
Does that exlude the Ford Puma, Or the Tata ?? or the BMW TD4?

what makes a LandRover?
If you don't know if you've got a Landy then you ain't got one :p

true land rovers grow old gracefully, no bells no whistles and hammered together.
P38 and freebie lost there way.
My freelander has no ABS, TC or HDC, it is a pure basic 4x4 albeit with a VCU. I don't even have a working drivers-side window. It only has 2 seats and a load of junk in the back. It has a roofrack with a set of ladders on it. It was made in solihull, it is a proper landrover. I'll even grind some paint off and let some rust take hold if that what it takes.:D

Polly singh on his "69 11a is wot makes it to landy status....

WOW BOB thats a huge compliment coming from blighty, beyond my imagination and i really dont deserve it!! There are far more dedicated people than me out there struggling to bring their Landys upto speed and then keeping them there. Thanx anyway!! Its the kind words of encouragement by our Peers that we most cherish !!:)

:D burn it- rusts quicker- on a more sensible note you think it will be around in 20-30 years, will have dissolved

Polly singh-been watching the progress of your project-keep up the good work

I woz playing devils advocate - thas all.

most of these points would also apply to the Willys Jeep (except the landy badge, of course).
We bicker constantly about being "true" to Land Rover, but the brand encompasses so many different things. Yes the Series were basic, but then most cars of that age are. I remember a 1955 Ford Anglia (Enfo for those that care) where a heater was an optional extra. Sure all the latest ones have electrickery everywhere - but then so does every other modern car. Its OK exstolling 1948 motors - but who wants to go back to 1960's brakes, let alone 1940's? the latest Landies, Hippoos included, are considerably safer and have better facilities (like a heater that works!). As I said in another thread, electronic traction controll, HDC etc are brilliant for everyday driving in these current conditions for the average motorist, sure it dumbs down the skill level, but that doesnt necessarily make it less enjoyable.
The only way Land Rover will??? survive is by making a better vehicle for its customers. They have to compete against other manufacturers. Sure, most of you would hate the thought of driving (say) an X5, but I bet if you were to do a poll amongst the general public, more would want to drive an X5 than a Series 2.

Most of the general public are stupid, off road ability find something that
1) doesn't cost the earth
2) when broken doesn't cost the earth

it must have a 2nd lever that clunks and does something big and mechanical underneath to help me when im stuck

it must look better dirty than clean

it must be a Land Rover

For me, badge aside, a Land Rover is a vehicle that I would look forward to getting into each and every time and get a smile on my face each time - and I can either pooter to town, bounce down a rutty lane somewhere or bugger off to the desert without so much as thowing the necessaries in the back.
