P plate 1976 isn't tax exempt - it's pre January 1973 for tax exemption. Seen a few like this knocking around, but strictly speaking it should be OK if it was done more than 7 years ago. If it's more recent then it should've been SVA'd, and in all probability be re-registered as a Q plate. If yer reg plate, Vin plate and V5 match up, don't worry, it's safe. I know a tax exempt SII that has a modified Rangie chassis, axles, suspension, engine and gearbox...

hnag about i could have a big problem here! next step?
I have the number and address of guy i bought it off in england and have the new keeper supplement from the log book

what else can i check to see if i bought a doggy motor??????

check for the actual chassis number stamped in the chassis like pikey sed,its easy enuff to tell if its been messed with

cheers Take 5 but this bare in mind i have up to now driven landies never got

''Vin plate and V5 match up''??? where do i check?

Vin plate is the metal plate with the chassis number stamped into it. Should be one in the engine bay. It should also be stamped somewhere else underneath but can't remember where...

Top of brake servo and O/S front chassis leg between wheel & bumper as I said in my 1st post.

ok i have the chassis number and the info from the log book

make: Land Rover
Model 88'' -4CYL
Date of reg: 13 03 1976
Wheelplan: 2-axel-rigid body
Cylinder capacidy 2286 cc

Surely it would not have passed the MOT if it was doggy??

I have been onto to the DVLA because tax book never came after 2 months but they said it dosen't matter if i take it to ireland i need to send in an export form

If its a defender chassis, then it won't be an 88".
It won't have a 2286 cc engine either, cause as far as I knew they only went in to very early 110's, which this isn't. Can you post the VIN number up here? Or PM me with it - i can probably find out more about it from that 4 u.

naladay - that number that you sent me is an engine number.
906xxxxxx Series III diesel 2286cc 3-bearing
IF your chassis is from 1976, it won't have a VIN number - it is too old. It will however have a chassis number, which is in the formats:
1962 - 1979
An eight digit chassis numbering system with suffix letters

The first, second, and third digits indicate the model and specification.
241-258,260-324 = Series IIA 88" & 109"
325-339 = Series IIB (110 Inch Forward Control)
340-354 = Series IIA 109"
5424 = Series IIA 88 Station Wagon (US Model) 259, 901-950 = Series III
951-955 & 895 = Lightweight
956-965 = 101 Inch Forward Control
355, 356, 358 = Range Rover
The remaining five digits starting with 00001 indicate the serial number.
The suffix letter indicates design modifications.
Note: The year, or model-year of manufacture have no identification number.

What engine does it have in it?
