On the sunject of doing things myself, would it be a one or two man (or woman ) job to swap the rear side panels out? I've got the CSW side with the glass in and want to take the solid panels out. Apparently it's just loads of bolts and need to prop the rood up.... Or will the roof have to come off? I will be doing that myself and I look forward to doing it.

I did it myself.

Not sure about the prop shafts Scrooby, I am hoping it will solve it when it's back to normal height. What I won't do, which is what I normally do and that's go out and buy the parts before actually getting to the bottom of the problem. I will hopefully have good news once its been dropped next Saturday. I am getting a good deal on the changimg of all the shocks and springs and also complete wheel swap, including tyre fitting and balancing.... So it isn't worth doing any of it myself to be fair.

Wise choice not to buy any parts or touch the track rod until you see what effect doing the suspension work has on it. Which is the point I was making.

Had it lowered yesterday to standard height (after a massive BALL ACHE) makes no different at all... If anything, I think it's worse than ever. When it was up on the ramp I had a little look. The track rod doesn't look obviously bent at all but it is sitting really tight again that bracket which doesn't seem right and the steering has still got those tight spots. Gonna have to take that bracket off and see what happens I think.

As someone said above, tight spots most liekly UJs on the lower steering column.
Saying that, I may as well just get this and hope it isn't a hard job to replace.

Hold fire before you order, the part number from the image you posted comes up as 2003 on

Just saying to check dimensions carefully, some sites say 97 on, I dont know what year yours is

Nope easy job. I don't know if they are all the same I think steering boxes did change at some point

Cheer Pal.
I checked paddocks and they have two different ones. One is " VA133509 up to 2007" and "from 2007 upwards"...

Cheers Mate, that's a great site...
It says 1997 and up but I assume they are all the same? mine is a 1988...
Was it a big job Kev?
On an '88 surely the lower shaft is the old style like this Pictured:
Shaft: RTC4738
UJ: VA133508

This is what I had fitted to my '89 110 originally. I changed the UJ's on mine and do not remember it being too difficult, it was one of the first jobs I did when I was still learning. I now have the later style lower shaft linked above as I fitted a complete 300tdi bulkhead that came with all the parts. But originally it definitely had the old style I have pictured, because when I had the head on crash that resulted in my chassis change I popped the joint in it (was the only thing preventing me from driving home)!

It is.... I am still regretting it. I bought it because it has a galvanised chassis and thought that would be a solid starting point but it seems that the chassis is the only good thing about it.

You're joking, that defender in the photo looks mint and looks like it has hada fortune thrown at it?
