+1 The 2.25 diesel is a tough old bird (I once had one that cracked a piston and the bloody thing ran for 5 minutes on engine oil alone), but it is not designed to cope with the additional induction pressure from a turbo. You would spend a huge amount of time, effort and money working out how to do it, and even if you were successful and could get insurance, you would probably not see a big improvement without introducing hideous fragility.
OTOH there is a reasonably priced and well trodden path to converting Series LRs to take the 200 Tdi which would give you about 50 more reliable horses and better economy.

Is the series 3 gearbox a straight fit
 
Good 200 TDI'S are getting harder to find and the prices people are asking is getting ridiculous.
You could probably get a 19J turbo diesel a lot cheaper , depends how brave you are.....
 
My series 3 ,2 1/4 diesel , Can I fit a turbo to it , if so which one is best
My series was very slow and the gearing didn't help,
So I fitted 7.50 tyres and Range Rover diff's
That sorted the gearing and as for more power I removed the injector pump to access the fuel setting which I increased half way between the maximum fuel setting and where the the pump was already set.
I can now drive at 55 to 60 no problem

Defo has a lot more torque
I have a 300tdi in a 109 but I prefer driving my 21/4
 
hmm that fuel pump thing sounds worth a try, I can get 65 out of my 2.286 diesel on standard, diffs 7.50's and overdrive but 55 is enough for me in a series, if I want to go fast I choose a different vehicle.
 
I agree it's not about maximum speed but more about keeping normal road speeds and not having to go up hills at 35 mph
 
indeed some more grunt on hills would be useful.

had an early 110 diesel years ago, had 6 people in the front 2 rows and the very back full of suitcases - might have had some on the rack too - boy did it struggle on the hills :D

Which arguably isn’t much better than bolting some random turbo onto a 2 1/4 lol
 
Do you have any pics of that engine bay?
I am thinking of doing that conversion to one of my 109's and any details of engine brackets radiator and exhaust would be much appreciated.

It's very simple,this is what I did
Remove front wings,bonnet,radiator panel,exhaust and transmission tunnel
Cut off the engine chassis mounts,fit engine and weld on mounting brackets
Turbo and down pipe on with home made side pipe
Cut off radiator front panel radiator mounting cowling which allows room for the tdi radiator pack

Tee oil feed from oil pressure switch and weld oil return in to the sump
I would not run any more pressure than 4 psi to start with,19j I think was about 6 psi but the compression was lower
