I received the hi lo switch for the D2. so that is a job for the morrow.

Today I mostly stripped the radiator off the Fender 300tdi, as the oil / mud flinger had come loose from the back of the crank pulley for some unknown reason and was rattling like a good un. So strip it off including the crank pulley, boy did I do it up FT when I changed the timing belt. :D:D

Have refitted the CP, now will rebuild it all tomorrow before starting in the D2 switch.

Just put a new fuel cap on it. I think I left the old one at a petrol station somewhere. Even something as simple as that isn't straightforward, as I had to file it down a bit so it would go on. Nice generous agricultural tolerances, eh?

Its a bonus to wake up and find it still there every morning . ****in rain washed smart water off today but it cleared up nice : )
 
changed all oils, again. I get ep90 and atf for free :)

front and rear diffs were a bit murky.....

Oh, and 'restored' some of the paint (sorry)
 
I've had a look at the oil leak at the rear of the transfer case this afternoon. Yes, that looks oily:



I've got a new flange and seal to put in. They don't give you a spring clip or new bolts in the so-called 'kit' so I re-used the old ones:

I know how tight it was back when I put the gearbox back together too. Maybe it's something that Land Rovers do in the spring. It's all back together now and oil topped up, so we'll see if that cures it.

Now to change the brake pads. Let's start at the back.

Surely it shouldn't be as easy as that? I was pleased to see all the improvements I made four years ago (here - https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/browns-brake-rebuild-thread.220055/) have paid off. Pistons are nice and shiny so there's no problem pushing them back in to accommodate the new pads. The nipples actually undo and work, so I could release a little fluid so it doesn't all come out in the engine bay. Now the other side:

I gave it a little bleed in case the system had ingested any air while I was opening the nipples and pushing the pistons back. I got a couple of bubbles out and tightened everything up. Ooer - soft pedal. Bugger. However, it was just taking up the slack, and after a couple of pumps was nice and firm I've just tried it gingerly around the block and the brakes feel more fierce than they were. I'll let them bed in and then take it out for a motorway run and see if braking hard at speed is any smoother.

I finally got round to fixing my reversing lights after putting it off for four years! Now I know why I put it off for so long! What a bitch of a job! My timing belt was easier and probably quicker, too!
Discovery 300 tdi, manual gearbox.
I'd bought a new switch, but after taking the old one out I found that the plunger was longer than on the new one! I just took the spacer off and put the old switch back in. Reverse lights work perfect now.

A few tips for anyone wanting to do this. I took the centre consul out to tackle it from the top, but still had to get underneath to swing the spanner. I got the spanner on easier from the top, but there's no room to do much else so had to go under to move it. I also had to take a club hammer to a 19mm combination spanner to straighten it out so I could get it onto the switch.
Also, have the spanner level with the ground and the open end pointing towards the front of the car, not the back, to get it onto the switch and move it easier.
 
fitted new steering bars new anti roll bar drop links and mounts new rear discs n pads ,,,brakes work now and no clunking from the front ,,happy days
 
Traced a wiring fault. I'm going to tidy up the rats nest of wiring and get all the dash lights, panel lights working and sort gauges out.

Fitted new front door hinges to the defender today!

What a great feeling hearingbthe door swoosh and click shut, rather than having to do a careful, lift/jockey and shove action each time! Don't know why I didn't do it straight away!! :)
 
Original rims sandblasted and repainted original colour (got the colour codes so it actualy matched-not just some random colour off the shelf)
New tyres as well......
Steering is way better on and off road now! :D

Just filled it up. I put approximately £55 worth of fuel in and I've covered 264 miles since the last time I did so. That works out at about 21p per mile. Who says Land Rovers aren't the ideal vehicle for motoring on a budget?
 
did my 1st ever ever oil change damn was I covered in the stuff.
will save the oil to mix with creosote for painting the fence proper proper job. damn I love my landy
 
Got around to doing some wiring today, got dash sorted with all panel lights working.

Took it for a run around the farm.....the difference is really noticible with brand new shocks!!

Adjusted my steering stops and stuck a big FO solar panel on the roof so I don't have to keep charging the batteries (short journeys and second vehicle)
 
Philip took his D2 in for its MOT retest, which it passed, but the top hose T-piece on the V8 let go in traffic, fortunately he had water on board and got back OK.
