thanks for the info fur trapper, but I remember helping my son undo the single flywheel bolt to replace the O ring oil seal on one of his v-dubs..

The front crank pulley to run the alternator had a bastid bolt to undue with a seal that would leak at times. But most oil leaks on them were caused by the case halves(bolts) loosing up a bit and a retite would solve that problem.:D

aye, I have worked on a few different v-dub engines for him in the past,
and they are really amazing engines really, for what they were originally.
i still cant get my head round the model numbers for ally cases and magnesium cases, but have worked on both...
as i seem to have a story on most things, one engine my son had in his "rat look" cabrio, was indeed a 1600 plus "beatle challenge cup" racing engine..now that revved like no other v-dub I`ve ever heard, and breathed through a holley twin barrel carb...
exhaust came out the side @ rear via an "empi" exhaust, but very little in the way of silencing!
never seen many other v-dubs lay rubber like that one did!
but oh, the fun we had driving it......lol..outragous is just one way to describe it..
then we had the army style baja saloon,
then we had.......lol..
Our life is V-Dubs, scooters and for me, my old disco oil burner...the only rubber that burns is the exhaust straps, or wiring at times..

Oh yes:D love them. Take a 1600 case and put big bore kit and twin solex or weber and header exhaust and get 175 hp from a VW and go like hell:D:DWe would take the crank and have machined with 8 bolts for fly wheel and then add the porsch clutch disc and pressure plate to hold the hp

They are a very simple engine to work on. The only weak point was the #3 cylinder under the oil cooler in the fan shroud would eat valves, as it ran hotter there by about 40 degrees

aye fur trapper.
"They are a very simple engine to work on. The only weak point was the #3 cylinder under the oil cooler in the fan shroud would eat valves, as it ran hotter there by about 40 degrees"
one time, my son phoned from "santa pod" raceway to say he had a problem with engine, whats best to do?
RAC recovery would be hours and hours away, so took plug leads off inturn to locate "missing" cylinder, took valve cover off that side, to find 4 valves intact, but found 1 broken valve spring, about third down from top.
said I,
take that push rod out, take plug out, drive home slowly on 3 cylinders firing, one puffing & blowing a lot.
son got home quicker than expected ?
OK said I....
yeh, done 70 ok down the M1...lol
made a funny noise though...
so I made a air pressure tool out of old spark plug with porcaline knocked out, a metal tube welded onto the metal part, length of hose contected to air compressor, run up to 100 psi, gave the valve spring cap a clout, made valve spring compress tool from old set of rocker arms on shaft with a bit welded on for leverage, popped out the 2 collets, valve cap, changed valve spring for another almost the same, replaced the bits again, rocker arm assembly back on, push rod back in, new plug back in, fired it up, ran sweet as a nut again..
all without taking the cylinder head off to do the job!..
He was lucky eh..
I believe "snap on tools" do one - same as - mine was a lot cheaper...lol

Took the carpets and soundproofing out to try to track down where the water is coming into the footwells, found a couple of pre drilled holes above the accelerator pedal which were letting the water in! Just need to let it dry out now and seal them up.

its a funny old world, but,
there was I, feeling a bit worried about voltage drop to my headlights, then this morning,
started up 200Tdi as normal, it gave a "cough" then drove 30 metres to the end of the road, look right, turned left and,
B O O M..
all in a big puff of smoke!
so, in reverse, key to start until back to my turning/road. first gear, key to start got it rolling enough to park it up outside house.
So, today, what DID I do to my landie...
struggled to get the rad out, as bottom oilcooler joint would`nt undo, then started taking of bits "in the way" of getting cam belt cover off...
I expect to see a long belt instead of a nice round one!!!
So, expect I`d better go look for tips on wtf I`m doing to see if its repairable or be looking for more big "bits"
ask me how I feel, as my old injun was old, but oiltight......
happy daze eh...:D

Got it collected by the company doing the engine swap and pre-mot work followed by a swift mocking about the state of it

I treated mine to another tank of fuel. I was pretty pleased with the 428 miles that my landy had done on the previous tank, especially considering the terrain driven, the amount of time the engine was running on tick-over, weight carried etc. I wasn't quite as pleased with the cost of filling up though.:eek::eek:  I usually just stick £10-£20 here and there until the tanks full.

Checked all oil and water levels (topped up where needed), greased the props, checked tyre pressures and stuck some fuel in it;)

I spent another day driving mine around the island today. It's so nice to be able to drive it every day.:)

I saw the disco today but the occupants wuz all AWOL when I drove by. I have a sneaky suspicion that they thought they'd spotted me though cos when they pulled away later on they slowed right down when passing a parked up white 110 csw. It weren't me though cos I was behind them.:p:p:p

They was under instructions to wave :D
Yu is allowed to gesticulate and do the "Grippa salute"

Finally got me snorkel connected up.....just in time to sneak across the Tamar :p

Painted rear 1/4 chassis anorl......which int easy in the dark in a car-park........before they start spreading chassis killer on the roads

You do know that you only pay to cross on the way back from pastyland? You can use the bridge instead of doing the submarine thing on the way down.:D:D:D
