took me "project" bumper up to a mates steel fab works this morning to get the recovery eyes welded onto it (mine and me mates welders just aint got enough amps to do the job proper) the recovery eyes are 20mm plate :D

Hi, I'm new to the Forum (and Landrovers), but over the past week I have changed the front coil springs on my Discovery (TD5 2000), replaced the battery, and still have discs and pads on the rear to do. Oh, and the ACE pressure gague needed replacing as well. Just wear and tear really so I don't mind. I've only had it a week but love it already

fixed the 2 holes in my passengers foot well just - temporarly - to get some practice doing real welding - its alot harder than laying lines and joining clean metal on a bench thats for sure.

ill say its stuck in place more than welded at the moment


i had my dash out as well , things are alot worse in there than i thought - will have to think carefully about which direction i take with this vehicle ....

then to cap it off i found a nice 7 cm hole x the width of the chassis rail right before the rear cross member - wasnt a hole but was a touch soft so gave it a chap - lots broke away - oops

on the plus side - 1000 miles and not a drop of oil or coolant used - and its a 19j ! - must be defective !
 
Borrowed a battery, fired up the diesel on the S3 I bought last week, bit of smoke but it cleared after a minute. Gave it the boot and strange noise from engine, like a loose chain ? or big end bearings?
 
Went down the scrappy today to find a 300tdi Disco that had been scrapped by one of the guys who worked there. Manual, 7 seater with 170K on the clock. Failed MOT on rust but was really clean of the outside and interior, ran fine too.
Had picked it up with grab so roof, windows and doors ruined. Boss man wouldn't sell me it complete neither. :(
So took some door card clips, a new ashtray and a indicator to replace my broken one. Also got a electric window retaining clip so finally after 6 months put my rear door card back on.

Had also seen loads of diggers out flattening the quarry next to the workshop over the past few weeks so decided to go have a look-see. Excellent place for off-roading however got it badly bogged down on one side in about 4-5ft of watery mud and about 50ft from the nearest tree.
Linked a couple of strops together to my rope winch and tried to pull it out but just kept snapping the line. After about 10 goes we gave up and walked back to the workshop and dug out the original wire cable for the winch and went back to have another go.
Nearly cooked my 12,000lb winch but managed to drag the truck out. Left the bonnet up and me and my mate were cowering in the footwells incase the cable snapped lol.
Managed to plot a route back through the soft mud and back to the workshop where it took about an hour to wash all the mud off.
Funny night though taking 3 hours was a bit much.

Fully undersealed the 110 with this stuff Hammerite Underbody Seal Underseal added Waxoyl 2;5L on eBay (end time 31-Jan-11 15:50:10 GMT)

Seems like really good stuff, super thick and tar-like. Chassis looks mint now :D Bloody horrible job though with no garage, lying on the gravel on my back and wire brushing off years of surface rust and crap! :mad:

Also fixed my heater with a new matrix, lovely and toasty now :D
And finally changed front brake pads. Old'uns just had 1mm left :eek:

That's what i've had to have done today... didn't realise mine were low though. It just started making a horrible metal-on-metal scraping noise, and kept seizing on every few miles.

Sadly, as I was on my way to work, I've had to drop it off at the local garage to have both left and right front pads changed.

Possibly the caliper too, if it's seizing.

They say 1.5 hours... shouldn't take that long, should it?!?
 
tonight ill mostly be investigating the "broken" gear box my missus text me about - she cant find anything to make her move

- how much we betting the hi/lo levers in neutral ?

:D - Left mine like that deliberately recently to try to educate missus a bit.... Managed to reduce the b*llocking from severe to mild, when I explained that I just did it as another little trick to try to slow down any f*cker that was trying to nick it

For pads alone, no, but for the calipers as well - if they are seized then that can slow the job down a lot. I'd say an hour at most though.
 
well, the job's done now... pads only, and was charged 90 mins labour. He said they were caked in crap, but the calipers were fine.

I guess I was charged 1.5 hours partially to make up for a very cheap hourly rate (£39.50 exc. VAT) and the free courtesy car, into which I put no fuel!

So, £110 in total. The left and right pads were £39.59 inc. VAT leaving £70 inc. VAT for labour. Take away another tenner because I didn't have to pay for the fuel to get to work and back, and I'm left with £60. So basically, I paid £60 inc. VAT for the labour charge to change both sets of front brake pads.

Not too bad I suppose...
