Balljoint fell apart today on drop arm from steering box.
Circlip etc dropped on to steering guard and luckily I could still steer it and get off motorway.
Arm and joint bought as a unit and has done about five hundred miles ... BRITPART of course !!!

Yes, I've seen that happen. The trouble seems to me to arise because the whole lot is just held in by a shear force on that circlip. It seems secure enough when you first fit it, but the circlip can vibrate out after a while. Fortunately, the thing remains steerable, it's just very loose. These days when putting them in I go round the circlip with a suitable drift and give it a few taps with a hammer to help ensure it's well seated in its groove. I do this while I've still got the internals of the ball joint assembly supported - usually with a socket on a bottle jack, so it's not being pushed down by the force of the spring. So far, after doing this I've not had one fall out. Not yet anyway.

Yeah the rubber boot on mine ( BP ) has decided to split and its only been on a few months so i will replace it with a bearmach one instead :oops:
 
Changed the drop arm ball joint (discovered the old one had all fallen out... thank fook for split pins, this truck really hasn't been looked after all that well by the last owner if at all), needless to say the slack in the steering is now all but gone with just the play from the UJs left now (should be doing them next week when the new ones turn up)

Tried to fit some LED dash lights - discovered one of the speedo ones had melted the holder which had then snapped, the fuel gauge one had melte the holder too and it had also snapped - did a temporary fix for all of them as I really need an illuminated dash.77
Refit the speedo cable securely for what I'm guessing is the first time in a long long time as I had to remove the steering column over to get me fingers to it (speedo should stop going bananas now);)

bled the brakes - a lot better than they were but still able to "pump" them up with the pedals.

emptied the water out me rear indicators... chucked a little instant gasket on 'em to try and keep 'em empty:rolleyes:

went for a drive (to put to air back in t'spare after using it for the brake bleed) to see how much wobble is left to get rid of - not a lot and bushes getting changed next week should get rid of it
 
Not mine, but someone else's. Helped him get some roof-mounted spotlights working- they'd been an ornamental feature for a while now. Hooked them into the main beam feed via their own separate switch so all legal, and switched by a relay so no danger of electrical fires... hopefully. :)
 
I've taken the rocker cover off mine, put sealant on either side of the gasket and put it back on in an attempt to reduce the amount of oil that seems to be anointing the back of the engine. We've been out for a short run, just to the shops, and it's still dry at the back of the engine, so maybe I've solved that one. I thought I was getting a little bit of a transmission clunk on my long run on Thursday, but there was no sign of it today. The propshaft joints are all sound and the bolts are tight, and there's no more than the usual amount of rotational slack in the drivetrain, so nothing for it but wait and see if it starts doing it again.

The starter motor decided to give up this morning, had to get the wife out of bed to take me to work, she was not impressed.

Luckily I have a spare in the shed........................................................somewhere.
 
Installed some drls in the grill.

As both were due to snapped wires think I might build some new looms over the winter to renew the wiring.
Congratulated myself on completing a job without needing t'lump 'ammer :D
 
Mend rangie after losing all power at ignition found to be brown wire from batt that merges into six wires to be at fault so soldered and heat shrink solved problem all good fitted smaller steering wheel as well
 
New grille, New Side vents, Pulled apart the headlights and painted the insides black, new blue sidelights, thought about buying the cream HSE interior but back out!

Bought 20" stormer wheels instead, guys coming to tint the RR in the morning

I'm frighten. My 200 tdi engine sounds very sweet, It puts out a puff of blue haze when I pull away from the lights etc which I think is due to worn valve stem seals; Its booked in tomorrow to get them done. Or should I have left well alone.
 
As I did not have my rear flange to fit I thought I would make good use of my time and underseal mine, I also thought I had covered up well!!
I now have a black wrist and some of those beauty spots on my face popular with 80's pop stars!! Anyone know the best way to get Hammerite of a face?

I tend to use white spirit and a pan scrubber. Obviously not advisable as part of one's everyday beauty routine, but OK for occasional use to get underseal or paint off.
 
changed t'glow plugs, 2 of the old ones were covered in oil so hopefully that's the cold starting improved and maybe less white smoke on start up, forgot to copper grease 'em though:oops: so will have to re-fit them tomorrow or just leave them in there forever.

this is the third job in a row not involving t'lump 'ammer... getting worried now:eek:
