Bought a snorkel for LR vanity the metal version, just removed the flaky paint etc before giving a coat of satin black. Just need to fettle an angle bracket for the securing clamps.
 
Finally made time to fit the alternator and replace the air box and hoses. Discovered the bonnet catch was badly bent so ordered a replacement.
 
Drained and refilled the axles with fresh oil and once i have sorted the H/Brake shoes and oil seal i will re-fill the trannybox :D

Ruined mine thinking I could repaint it black. Looks ****e. Very patchy and streaky. What have I done !!!

On the bright side I fitted some new defender seats. Great ride height and quite comfy.
 
Found that my compressor regulator was faulty so the second attempt at spraying was much better. Still have more runs than a Jacobs ladder though.

Also still loving the ride height after fitting the brand new defender seats.

If you have any runs you could flatten them out with 1500 then you could use cutting compound will be okay then.
 
I think it's reacting with the paint underneath. I've had this trouble before with other vehicles. Short of peeling the whole thing to bare metal there isn't a great deal to be done. eventually, if you keep building up the coats you get sufficiently far away from the paint underneath so it's not so conspicuous.
 
Single action DA, with cutting compound, rough grade and then a fine on a medium foam pad with lots of water. Then a random action DA with fine scratch paste with a water spray bottle to lube , then anti swirl paste, then a nice Carnauba wax and finally polish on a soft compound foam pad, should resolve the issue, maybe.

About 15-20 hours of the above and it might look good, hard to say without seeing it. I spent two weeks cutting back and polishing my old white Defender before I was happy with it.
As its black I would try to use 1500 like stated above and then 2000 grit wet and dry to remove the runs, always in the direction of the run though, which I'm sure you know.

What's single and random action DA? The rest I just about understand. I'm not going for an award finish though. Cutting compound should help blend the patches. I have a feeling the first time I go laning it'll all get scratched to buggery any way.

I agree! :) Standard coatings are terrible for an off road vehicle! :( Always good to get extra on!

Paint reaction is fairly common, wouldn't worry too much about appearances, if the coating is thicker, you wil get extra protection. As you say, your painting will improve with practice.
 
This is the DA I use, head only spins in one direction, polishes and blends the paint, but if you then put what you've just polished in direct sunlight it will be covered in swirl marks and give the effect of a CD.

To remove the swirl marks, you need a random action, all it means is the head spins in random directions and with the correct paste etc will remove the swirl marks, leaving you with a smooth constant finish. I use this one.
