Been doing some investigation in to why it wont start.

checked earths, big one from battery to gearbox is fine, big one from engine to chassis is fine. Earth of the back of the starter motor has gone missing, so i ran a jump lead from the motor to the battery and still nothing.

Used a multimeter to see if there was power to the solenoid, which there was constantly on one terminal. Then check the solenoid to motor cable and there was power there as soon as i turned the key to 3rd position.

Which i think, only leaves the motor, wouldn't be ignition switch or power wouldn't be getting to solenoid, and the same with the relay, which i changed for another anyway.

So i think the problem is the motor, which is odd as it worked once, then wouldn't work and just clicked, the worked and now just clicks again. Worn brushes internally?

just done the clutch as well so skint :( its on its period ;)

It's worth popping the starter off and giving it a good clean up. Make sure everything that should move does and stick it in a BIG vice to test then put back on. If solenoid stuck in out position a light tap or three with a rubber mallet will often dislodge it but if it has stuck once it'll do it again if not cleaned out.

Don't think solenoid is stuck. Had that problem before and it made a horrid noise when running! Plus I'm pretty sure I can hear it slapping the little cog in place when I turn the key. Personally think the brushes have gone in the motor :/ tried rocking It back and forth in first while holding the key on to try and encourage it to turn but it would. Gave it some "taps" but nought changed.

Soon as I retrieve my socket set from work I shall whip it off and have a play. Last thing I think it could be really :(

short the terminals on the back of the solenoid. will confirm if a solenoid issue or starter issue.
noteworthy points!
use an old unwanted screwdriver. its likely to get hot.
be very careful not to short it to earth. it will get hot.
be careful of sparks. its likely to flash and spark when contact made.
I accept no responsibility

edit cos of below VVV
ignition off, put it in neutral!

Lol I did that this morning cos mine was being a ####. Just remember that ignition key needs to be at position 2

shorting the main terminals will just make it spin.
supplying the coil terminal will engage the starter.

(presuming its a pre engage starter ere', not an inertia starter)

I'd no choice, solenoid wasn't engaging so it was just whirring away quite happily. Ordered a new motor now though

Yeah ill be refurbing it when I get it off as it used to play up occasionally but now its all of the time. Pain in the arse but a new one will be here this week

just fixed one the other day.

they use a thick washer for the solenoid lever to act against, mine had worn the metal in the middle of the washer so it sometimes just moved that. i just rebent the thing with a u, so it is jammed in tight again :D

it looks a right sod to replace

Anyone know what thickness of ground wire would be suitable? I was thinking about 25mm
(170 amp) for a starter motor strap

could go a bit excessive and get a 70mm one ;)

Make it the same thickness as battery cable - doesnt neeed to be any thicker. Halfrauds sell em cheap enough.

Made a bracket from bulkhead support to rad panel to mount "stuff" too as I don't want anything on the wings. Fitted power steering tank to said support. Filled tank and ran round fixing all the leaks. Basically anywhere there was a join there was a leak. :( then ran out of ATF.
