Sue on a Defender there is a Nut plate that has a clip that clips in. I usually change these at the same time as the bolts because they do rust. and sometimes seize. So the nut plate should be there however if you have trouble it may have moved out of position or its rusted and needs changing

Thanks :D The bolts appear to be turning when I put a socket on the top bolt, is that all I need to do or does this nut plate need holding

The captive nuts should hold themselves. You'll probably find that they are actually loosening and because theyre pretty long bolts its not evident at first. The nut plate (if its not fixed in place on yours) can be a bugger to line up when you're trying to put the bolts back in, unless you've got slim lady's hands that is lol

Thanks, I have turned them all but as you say, they didn't appear to have moved :D:D

Will worry about putting it back together later :eek::eek::eek::eek:
 
went to change the blow front indicator bulb on the 200 tdi to find that the bulb was fine but the rubber ring which keeps the in line connector together had perished and fallen apart, temp fix with some gaffer tape which I find the part on line.
 
OK one side is off, one bolt came out, the other broke but I managed to fish the bits out of the bottom.

Other side one bolt has broken and the other is spinning but not coming out, what next please :D

LOL, just looked at the time. Works out at an hour a bolt, this could be a long job
 
Options tighten up until it snaps like the others is the bumper scrap??? I.e why are you hanging it?? Cannyou try and leaver the head upwards while you undo it?? it might just be tight. It may have to be a grinder job and a fair bit of cutting.

Older plates had a nut welded and the welds break leaving it spinning later ones are a plate with a thread in

The bumper is knackered and I have a winch bumper to go on. Was challenged by nrgserv yesterday to fit it myself :eek: He doesn't think I can, and he is probably right but still.

So how do you get a plate with a broken bolt out of a hole thats too small :confused::confused:

I will need new bolts and plates anyway

Well done!!

Next you can hack saw through the bolt just above the plate. Then the plate should drop out and the remains of the bolts fall through the hole.

Get some new plates and bolts ordered and cover the thread in copper grease before you put them together!! One note some winch bumpers have massively oversized holes so you may wish to get some bigger than normal washers to put under the bolt heads to make it all Aok and look neat.

P.S worse thing about the winch bumper is its weight I thought I'd be cleaver and remove the winch and bumper as one undid the bolts and slid the bumper forward off the chassis. Then Promptly headbutted the bonnet. so be a bit wary as theyre bloody heavy!!
 
Left two rolls of gaffer tape on the roof at the end of the car boot sale and promptly forgot about 'em

Drove to Cardiff and Back and round a bit - only noticed em when out the front atalking to a neighbour.

Thank goodness they was the real good sticky ones as they were almost full rolls!
 
full service inc transfer box oil, front discs and pads, window winder and diagnosed a faulty abs sensor causing the 3 amigos to make an appearance, apart from that just another lazy day!

Thank you, got the plate and bolt out without cutting, I used the Henry vacuum to get all the crap and wet soil :eek: out and managed to get it almost out, then hit it with a hammer :rolleyes:

Funny you should post that pic, have just asked Neil if he can weld a bit on the chassis. I dont think that comes under failing the challenge :D:D:D

I cant lift the bumper on its own so wont be trying lifting it with a winch. Need some other bits so I will order the bolt tomorrow
 
Finished putting Me Noo carpet in the rear tub. Had exactly enough t do both wheel boxes, sides, upto the top of the tub. And the back of the rear bulkhead. :D

I've used a Waterproof carpet with soundproofing/insulation attached to the back. & I've got some thin waterproof carpet to do the sides and the roof. Though I don't think I've got enough to do sides and roof so may have to have a rethink.
