Been trying to track down an annoying rattle/squeak/odd noise in the engine bay for a while, so today jet-washed the engine bay, Used Gunk engine cleaner and a scrubbing brush to get it clean (ish!) and set to to revving it, listening, revving, listening, ticking over listening etc and kept getting drawn to the fan! However, thought nah, must be waterpump/pulley bearing/summat else ...
So my son says (One who knows feckorl about anything outside gaming) "should the engine be wobbling like that dad?"
I say "well, yeah, they all vibrate a bit, diesels can't help it ..... "
"Well it looks odd to me" says the little twunt ...
.. and it was! The viscous fan was running off-centre, and causing a low rumbling, sometimes squealing noise .. So I made a viscous fan remover (cut a bit of 5mm plate 32mm) and removed it, this is what I found ..
So whilst the viscous fan _is_ working, it's bearing isn't which isn't surprising as it's (like Hitler) only got one ball!!!!
Phew .. I'd just priced up a new waterpump, timing belt and all the ****e for a full service in an attempt to cure the noise .. £150+ .. and when I started it without the fan the noise was completely gone and the engine as vibration free as if it wasn't even running!!
Jeez what a difference .. be happy when I get a new unit ...
PS, if anyone has a cheap working viscous unit they don't want, pm me please .. I is a pauper ..

5mm offcut of steel, just ground 32mm 'spanner' slot in one end .. worked a treat. Heavier gauge (a LOT) than normal Viscous spanners, so made the job very easy ..

A mate is sending me a viscous unit, £20 all-in so can't be bad!
Just been out running and driving for a while without the viscous fan and all is good with it. Engine got to temp easily and just stayed there! However we're towing the caravan to the Lakes in two or three weeks so I won't chance it .. and knowing someone's sending me one tomorrow is good ..

Had the air-con re-gassed... what a difference it makes! Had the beast less than a year and never really needed the air-con but with this hot weather and the leather seats I wanted some comfort!
Not knowing whether the air-con was foobard or not I used KWIK-FIt for their "make it cooler or no charge" - just in case the re-gas didn't work! Glad to say that it does work and now I have icy cold air on demand!
Also fitted some tie-down loops in the rear. Given that I don't use the dicky seats in the rear I managed to find some tie down rings that bolt into the seat mounting points - nice and easy job but made a bit of a bitch in this heat!

The game of chase the oil leak continues.
Fixed the leak on the rear diff pinion seal.
Fixed the leak on the engine sump tonight.
Now spotted the front diff pinion seal is leaking now that oil leak isn't hidden by the oil ****ing out the sump...

Right The 80 inch trialer should be standing on its own springs when I get some new spring bolts from Dingocroft tomorrow. Welding rollcage to chassis tomorrow eve. Getting there slowly!! Many thanks to Bro for upsidedown welding and much swearing. I hope my BBQ skills or lack of was some consolation for spending all your time here helping me out.
The old man has been busy on his lathe so we have some modified adjusting nuts for fitment of an 18mm P38 4 pin diff to an early rover diff case. Eventually to fit the 80 inch front series axle. As I left Pop had a new driveflange in the lathe ready to take down for the construction of our own version of a salisbury rear axle locker. A mod I/we have had planned for a while soon to be sent back and fourth to be welded machined and finally fitted. None of these are important but progress is progress!

Right went to Dingocroft this morning first thing. picked up some parts. came back and ripped into the trialler,
Suspension is all done, Rear end is Soooooo very soft!! Both rear spring hangers mounted, new bump stops fitted, cage mounted fully well 98% one front cross bar and a few more welds but its solid and on finally!!
