For the last week or so I have noticed a lack of posts from Freelander 1 owners. Now the reason for this could be one of two things, 1) They have no problems and they are out and about driving. 2) The bugger has broken down again and they are desperately trying to get it started and they don’t have time to post anything.

Option 3 - they are old and can't hear the bits falling off.

Yes ... It is un-nerving when they run well and nothing is wrong ...
Know what you mean, the old girl is running like a dream - sweet as a nut and has been for ages. We have relis visiting in Jan and Feb next year when the Freelander will revert to its tour bus duties and I can't help but think its saving trouble up!

Well. after a week of work I got my FL1 back together.
It started first try with no leaks.
Then it started acting like a freelander…..On the test drive I noticed it sounded butch, with an exhaust growl it didn't have before.
My guess is the flange gasket that I reused might be blowing.
Shortly after I got a check engine light with the old intake manifold message.
Looks like I have something to do tomorrow. (God knows I wouldn't want to just relax!)

I got a text from the mother in law asking if I can look at her 2001 V6, as it's started changing gear very roughly. :( So looks like my evenings this week will be taken up checking gearbox solenoid valves.

Well things have been fine until today I was noticing the windows kept misting inside the car (not due to fun lol )
Anyway thought at first it may be due to the weather
So I was cleaning the inside and low and behold the passenger side front carpet is soaked
So after some effing and jeffing I started to dry the carpet (wet & dry vac ) the liquid is red
So it must be a fault with the heater matrix
Just wondering before I start messing has anyone changed a matrix on a freelander 1

But have you fixed the ticking noise Rich? :)
Well Rob, I just got back from a 40km test drive and the noise appears to be gone. (Cautiously optimistic!)
The Hippo is running quite smoothly so I am happy about that.
However it seems that my balance VIS motor has packed it in out of spite so I pulled out the flap assembly till
the new one arrives. It never ends! :(

Keeping mother in law happy comes before anything else, well second to keeping the wife happy. Besides if a simple solenoid valve going down causes more serious gearbox damage, then I'll have even more to fix, which means less time for PWM5s

Fortunately I never had to change the heater matrix. But I know how too, and unfortunately that means the whole dash out:(
Give yourself plenty of time and label everything up as you remove it. Take lots of photos and beware of airbags.
You only want to do this once, so put a decent replacement in.
Have fun:)

Drove it nearly 400 miles last two days. Glad to say it didn't miss a beat.

Wish I could say the same for mine. My auto did a funny thing on the way to work yesterday. It disconnected drive from the engine, but seemed to be applying engine breaking, which was odd. Luckily putting it in neutral allowed me to coast off the main road and out of harms way. Cycling the ignition cured the problem, and it's been fine since then. I think my Freelander just wanted to be in with the crowd, since the mother in law's V6 has also sprung that gearbox fault.
