I went in search of the knocking noise coming from the passenger side today. I put the car on ramps and found the inner bush on the wishbone looks slightly misshaped and very slight cracked so its time to break out the poly bushes. Whilst I was under there I also found the lower engine mount is knackered and I have what looks like the start of a leaky diesel pump.

Some good news was had, I noticed some cracking in the vacuum pipe to the actuator which was swiftly replaced, now the car is sooo much more responsive, hopefully this might be the cure of my occasional lack of oomph.

What leads him to that - There's so many faults it could be, just read through a few pages on here first

while under load, by under load i mean accelerating there is a sound almost like a machine gun and lots of black smoke ease off a little no noise and no smoke ??
 
Today I bought a Freelander. I don't know what model it is but it's got most of what I was after. It has heated leather seats, heated front screen and it's TD4 auto. Anything else I need, I'll fit. Above all it was cheap. Now the fun stuff can start.

The seller wanted £2,750. We agreed a sale at £2,300 after he couldn't find the V5. I was after a Freelander with the heated front screen as that is very expensive to retrofit.
I'm happy with the amount but was prepared to pay up to £4,500 for the right car. So I'll now have a reasonable budget to play with for some improvements. :) There's also some minor painting needed to correct some age related marks.

I've really want to get a facelift...not that I'll ever consider getting rid of MY01 TD4....Maybe in the summertime :)

I've had many Freelanders over the years, all pre facelift. I was specifically after a facelift as I prefer later interior and better headlamps.
I'm looking forward to selling the Discovery and making the Freelander individual for me to enjoy :)

What would say are the biggest differences between the Disco and the Freelander as far as driving and comfort are concerened?

The two aren't comparable really as they are completely different in design. The D3 is much more expensive to run in regards to maintenance. I recon it's cost me about £150 per 1,000 miles in components. It does seem very fragile for such a heavy vehicle. Driving wise, the Discovery is nicer than the Freelander on A roads or the motorway. On our Cornish lanes, you are always aware of its size. I prefer the nippy ability of the Freelander on a daily basis and the lower running costs. The Discovery is a good looking and awesome vehicle but comes at a price I can't really justify spending.

Going from my D1 experience - I'd add that the Disco takes longer to stop - there's a lot of weight to slow down. I found both equally comfortable - although later Discoveries presumably ramp up on this. The feed back I had from the kids though is that the rear comfort was better in the Disco - but then maybe they had growth spurts between car changes :) A stupid little thing I found as well - that might be important depending on where you live - is that the Freelander handles speed bumps better! Once again, I suppose the weight of the Disco thumps into them harder meaning you have to take them slower. One thing I never really found was any wallowing with the D1 - people recon they lean round corners a lot - I found they were fine.
