Got my first ever FL2 last Monday (08 plate TD4 with 83k on the clock and fastidious service history) and very pleased with it. Got it remapped today and that's made a significant difference.

Nice, mine is a 2009 MY TD4 too.
Be careful not to use full power in 1st gear, as the gearbox isn't very strong, the factory mapping is actually torque limited in 1st to stop the gearbox from exploding. Basically LR used a gearbox that wasn't rated for the power the engine could produce, so they had to torque limit the mapping.

Changed the air filter as had one I bought earlier. Cleaned up the engine a bit, cleaned the injector and hpfr sensor and sealed them with dielectric grease. Seems to keep it happy

Sitting in my Freelander trying to keeping my feet warm after walking stupid dogs!
and the first hiccup In the new one as arrived 😩 the in-line thermostat upgrade as failed
can’t believe it ! A expensive gates one as well I am raging !
only really done short trips so not been noticeable but it’s a7m ride home and it’s barely got up to 1/4 and holding it at 2k it gets up to temp then back down on tick over with the heater on

Hi, do you think it's a dodgy stat or it's somehow twisted slightly in the pipe? I must admit I hadn't heard of the stat in the hose way when mine needed doing some 4 yrs ago, so did it the more labour intensive & it's been fine since.

It's not uncommon for the temperature of the engine to drop if there's no load on the engine. Basically the heater is pulling more heat out engine that it's making off load. The TD4 is very thermally efficient, which is why LR fitted a FBH as standard or an option.
This issue is pretty common with lots of diesel engines, not just the Freelander. ;)

Definitely the fiat vans we have are awful and run cold as it’s mostly stop start driving doing deliveries
But this is more server only approaching 1/2 way when you hold it at 2k and soon drops off when you start driving to 3/4 to half way
I have ordered a nee thermostat just don’t want to mess around this time of year with dark nights but can’t really use it as is so
No choice

I have just bought a Gates thermostat to fit and now I am wondering if it’s worth doing? My TD4 stays low temperature but tbh it has never really bothered me that much, just thought it might be a good idea…?

Definitely a good thing to do
I have done a few and the difference is worth the hassle tbh
I am putting a new one in this week as the weather as deteriorated enough that it would take ages to get the temp up

Okey dokey I will give it a go. Waiting for a dremel cutter to arrive so I can get the clip cut and do it.

Well, I finally got round to changing the fuel filter and also fitting a new Bosch LP fuel pump on Freddie. Being a newer TD4, he has just the one pump in the rear o/s arch.
The old one was unknown to me, I thought going for Bosch would be a decent move.

TBH, there is a difference in sound, but more in pitch than volume when right in the arch with all the covers out. Once all assembled again and the wheel back on etc., I’d say it is slightly quieter.

I took a video of the old and the new, just to capture the sound changes more than anything…

Oh… and an oil/filter change, with some nice Mobil 1 0-40 for winter.

Still have the air filters, IRD oil change and rear diff oil change to do, but that’s for another day (too dark!)

Reinstalled the head after completing a top-end rebuild. Fitted the refurbished turbo, new plugs (had to helicoil two glowplug holes) replaced all filters and gaskets and bolts that needed to be changed, second hand EGR. started it up today and white smoke worse than before and loads of smoke above 2k revs. Oh well. more diagnostics and poking at things tomorrow while it is pouring with rain. Joy!

Hi there, if you had a lot of smoke before you may well have a blocked or gunked up cat/exhaust or even dpf if yours is a newer one. When these are dirty they can cause huge amounts of smoke. I’ve just cleaned mine out as it got near fully blocked shut. Now my landy is running the cleanest it ever has from the tail pipe. It actually made the factory emissions limit on the smoke tester even with the Ron box installed.
