Went to Castleford with my friend David from the Shipyard. He then sat in non-starter 2001 Freelander TD4 with manual box, whilst I towed it back home to Beverley in my 2wd FL1 TD4.
Well impressed - surprisingly so - with the towing ability. Since Christmas Day morning, I've done more 425+ miles on same tankful of fuel, including towing my 2nd FL1 for about 60 miles.
Need to find out why its engine won't start...
When I checked dipstick when I first viewed it on Chrimbo evening, hardly ANY oil registered:confused::mad:
Pased MOT with no advisories on 8th December and only 65k miles on the odo!
Previous owner said it was fine whilst off-roading, but then was going into limp mode intermittently, before dying completely.
I just tried to turn it over, but it was just clicking...
Wondering about possible CPS, as I've had that before and last owner said somebody had suggested that.
I'll stick a known good battery on it tomorrow and see if that makes any difference.
I'll also have a gander on the LZ International RESCUE to see if anyone over here in East Riding of Yorkshire has a decent diagnostics setup.
After towing home without incident, the heater fan suddenly stopped. Checked the fuse by driver's knee fuse box, but that was AOK when tested with Digital Meter.
I plan to pull out the switch tomorrow, clean contacts and retry. If that fails, I'll swap the switch from my 2nd FL1.
4WD is evidently working fine, so if engine is truly FUBAR-ed, I'll swap it along with better wheels and tyres to my first one.
My brain is now hurting and I need to eat something edible and energy replenishing AND imbibe a "two-fingers" measure of 12yrs old Scotch....
PS: I paid £310 for the 2001 FL1, which comes with HALF a tank of diesel and 11 months MOT:cool::cool::cool:

If you get a car and there's hardly any oil in the engine - you have to question everything!

Unless there is a pretty serious oil leak somewhere, it won't have had any maintenance for a loooong time.

I went for it just to transfer the working 4wd components, 16"wheels, much better tyres, better driver's SEAT, rear parcel shelf, toolbox and a few other 'bits' n'bobs" over to my first FL1 that's running in 2wd-mode. If that's all I end up doing, I think it'll be well worth £310 and whatever I get back if I send the rest for scrap value. 2nd car actually comes with LR main dealer service history to approx 40k miles.

The IRD and diff have been sitting in the garage now for 7 years :oops:

The roof rails, headlights, rear window regulator, passenger seat squab (to replace my drivers side) and numerous other bits have come in useful though.

That reminds me, the rear left window is u/s on my first one. Not yet investigated why and other passenger door lock doesn't open unless first using inside handle to unlock it. I've not checked the roof lining yet either. I'm certain I'll get my moneys worth out of the older car.

Might just be the starter solenoid contacts....easy repair if it is...:D
Yup...although the extremely low oil level on dipstick is of great concern...
I see you're from Gainsborough. I lived in Retford until my divorce 9yrs ago after 35yrs marriage. Was back there again a couple of weeks ago for some more used solar panels for my boat project.

The passenger rear door will frequently only open from the inside. Its only been like it for the 11 years I've had the car!

I have resolved my headlining issue, we've got a pup, so installed a dog guard that holds it up. ;)

The headlining in the replacement car will almost certainly only be good enough to speed up the restore process, by restoring that one and then fitting it in your car. They are now all of an age where the foam lining is weeeeell past its sell by date.

Luckily my early car has windy up windows in the back, so fewer regulators to go wrong. Only the rear door has gone while I've had it.

Passed 170000 miles today, and I have also today come to the conclusion that the recent new noise the old girl has developed is quite probably a wheel bearing after initially suspecting a pulley.
