Dropped the FL at the local garage last night, with a new radiator and a breather hose (which mysteriously went missing when they had it before, in my opinion) and instruction to please check the rocker gasket which I think is leaking, fit the new hose and radiator (having booked it in of course).
Oh and fit the engine cover and air box which they forgot to give back last time they had it (having not fixed the 3 amigos issue).

Got home to find the car had been dropped off with the keys in it (people were home all day - they could have knocked) and a note saying it was a bigger job than they were expecting and could I phone on Monday to book it in next week.

Had a look under the bonnet; no hose, no engine cover and the whole engine covered in oil, even new bits I fitted recently.

What would you do?

Changed the bl@@dy fuel filter. It was well and truly stuck in there. In the end I had to drill a hole through the bottom of the casing just big enough to get a long 3/8 extension bar through, then put a 12mm long reach socket onto the bar and hit seven sorts out of it to get it out.

The old filter didn't reach the bottom of the tube so the fuel pipe connected to the filter was well inside the housing. So I had to drill two small holes either side of the housing so that I could poke two small screw drivers in to release the pipe clips and get the fuel pipe off. What a nightmare.

The earth connection was ok, so thats a bonus cleaned it up and sprayed with contact cleaner to clean it up. I put a container under the filter when I released to top fuel pipe and was supprised to see in the bottom of the container what looked and felt like grit (see picture).

All put back together now with liberal amounts of copper slip applied so hopefully next time it wont be so difficult to remove. Total time to do the job around two and a half hours.

I greased my fuel filer and pump for next time, not if, but when next time comes, it will be easy to replace.

I'm so not looking forward to changing mine next time around.

Fitted a new left hand bumper lamp as some muppet in it's past changed a bulb and didn't seal the connectors up properly so the whole bloody lot was rotted right throurgh!

£34 from Stratstone Land Rover including bulbs, not bad :).

Changed ABS sensor ont r/o but still got the fooookin 3 amigos, totally foooooked off now, back to have another diagnostic reading
Gunna get it sorted MOT the foooker and sell it and buy Jap crap

Replaced the exhaust back box on my 2002, TD4. Noticed it was rusted on the top when I removed the diff cover the other day. Can't complain, it was the original box and had been on since the car was built. The rest of the exhaust system is sound-had a good look with the fitter whilst it was up on the lift. Cost £75 fitted at Barnes Silencers, Bangor Gwynedd.....highly recommended, have used them in the past a couple of times.
The bitch should be o.k. for the MOT in April.

tried to change IRD oil,
couldn't loosen filler plug so I'm very glad I haven't taken drain plug out first,
so a big THANK YOU to everyone who has taken the time to write up this warning,
last time it was changed was at LR garage so there is no excuse for the bad work they did.

I know where you are coming from......I did my IRD oil last week and the filler plug was ridiculously tight. Anyone would think there was mega pressure behind it or the plug holds the car together !! Took real effort with a long breaker bar + well fitting socket to remove mine. I reckon they hammer them up with an impact wrench. You wouldn't even think of tightening the engine sump plug up that tight...It's only a filler plug for fecks sake !!!!

when I did mine I noticed a glue/sealer type substance in place of the copper/alloy plug washer, just wondering if this stuff is causing the problem with release.

Luckily mine was over the pit so didn't have much trouble getting the filler/level plug out.

Investigated a suspected oil leak. Sure enough, oil is leaking into #3 plug hole from the join between the head and cam carrier.
Thought about taking the cam carrier off to reseal it but got a bit scared about disturbing the cam belts, so just cleaned the cam cover and put it all back together :behindsofa:

Blanked off a bit of pipe which is currently doing nothing because of a missing part and immediately the engine settled down and started to run smoother. In the long run I'll get the missing bit replaced - I have one, just couldn't figure out how to get the VIS/plenum unit off so I could get where I needed to.

I think I'm gonna check it in for a full service including cam belts at the local indy, and ask them to reseal the head/cam carrier joint and also replace the hose.

Made a decision not to replace the radiator as the bottom hose was in fact getting hot when I tested it yesterday! Tested it again today after a 20 mile blast up the M5 and back - stone cold :( So I think I'll do it anyway for ****s and giggles, when I have a spare weekend...

Replaced rear shoes, fitted new handbrake cables, swore alot, fitted EGR bypass which was surprisingly easy. all in all productive day :D

Went for a drive, to get a second cheap roof rack,
going to make one solid one out of two flimsy ones..

I crawled under mine today to get beter acquainted with the checklist of what to fix. Had a nice run to Toulouse and back over the weekend (500km) and all went well and I got 8 litres per 100km fuel consumption (thing thats about 35 m to the gallon).

Nothing urgent going on but my checklist is as follows:
1) buy some ramps to make working underneath a little easier
2) check out the central diff mounting. A couple of times when going round roundabouts I got a soft knocking under the floor around central rear of the the back seat
3) investigate practicalities of taking off prop as I have a mate coming in a couple of months from the UK and I think i will ask hime to bring VCU and support beairings with him so I can get that all sorted before too long
4) Hill descent button doesnt seem to work (check out wiring to the switch) but really I dont need it as it will be my wife who drives it most of the time while I am away.
5) get some roof bars before the summer so we have something to strap teh kayaks on to when the kids want to go up stream
6) a wash and polish!

Thats about all for now.
