Nice. But I have to ask why? That's an expensive way to fix a ticking cam follower. Are you removing the engine to change the head? In my experience, trying to change a head with the engine in the vehicle is a nightmare, which runs a very real risk of breaking the seal on the liner.

The head was (comparatively) very cheap. I have previously tried changing lifters, Which wasn't a fun job. That is what prompted me to just replace the head as there will be no messing around with the cam cradle etc. The head is ready to go so it should just be old head off, new head on. I'm not too worried about the liners. I have done head gaskets on K-series before without an issue so don't really anticipate a problem. I'm changing a few other bits while I am in there, a timing belt idler I really should have changed last time and I am also doing the oil pump and the oil pickup O-ring. I only want to take the engine apart once so am going for it.
It's running well at this point, just sounds a bit like a diesel so it's time to deal with it before the winter. As well, when I have the head off I should be able to see if there is are any issues with piston/bores. I'm hoping that's not the case.

It was yesterday. But I found what what making the rubbing sound from the NSR wheel. Part of the backplate's stone guard had rusted off and was rubbing on the inside of the drum.

So I decided to take all the remaining stone shields off, both sides.

I also took the opportunity to replace all the brake parts, including shoes, springs and drums. I used mostly Delphi parts, except the drums, which were Britpart.

I painted the drums too, just to make it look like better, especially with the addition of stainless steel retaining screws.

It's good to have a handbrake that actually holds on a hill, and also slows the car down as an emergency brake.:)

I also repaired an exhaust metal hanger, and replaced both exhaust rear rubbers.
The headlights also got there anual abrasive clean and quality polish too.

I even found time to re-aim the windscreen washers and replace the broken window cable on the driver's door.

Fingers crossed for the MOT on Wednesday.

Drums look great

Hopefully they'll stay that way for a while.
And the headlights too. I think mine would benefit from that treatment. What product did you use?

On the what have "I" done today... replaced the rear wiper arm that has recently started removing paint from the boot door. Time to get the paint out now!

Well it passed the MOT, and with only 1 advisory. This was the smell of diesel from the engine bay. I'm attributing it the the HP pump leaking, again. :(

At least the MOT is out the way. He asked what I'd done to the rear brakes, because he'd never seen his Tapley meter show 65% on a handbrake before. He said the last Discovery he tested only just managed 70% on the foot brake.
The brakes are very good, and they're not bedded in fully yet.
So just the fuel leak to sort and this creaking sound, and she's all good.

You know what happens once you've finished working on it and everything is sorted 100%.

It breaks again!!!! :p

LOL, well done mate.

I'm hoping not Ali. I've got a time consuming project on at the moment, so could do with the Freelander behaving it's self for a bit. I have got to so a basic oil and filters service, and sort the fuel leak, but those will wait for a couple of weeks.

Great result
Cheers guys.

I've worked out why the handbrake is so good. I think it's due to the VCU transferring an amount of the braking effect from the rear wheels, to the front. I must say the HB is the best I've ever got any Freelander, so I'm happy. The daft part is, I don't actually use the HB in normal driving, I just stuff it into park and be done with it.:D

Well, a day of major positives, but a couple of negatives too.

Both trailing links replaced and new ARB bushes fitted. What a difference they've made! lots of knocks and grumblings have disappeared. Very pleased!

I also installed one of those LED replacement boot lights. Got it from ebay for £9. If it lasts it will be money well spent. I can highly recommend them.

New aero wiper blades fitted to the front. They're great.

The downsides of today are that my recently sorted courtesy/map lights are playing up again (bloody switches!), and the rear wiper arm that I fitted the other day still contacts the boot door and there is some play in the gears/mechanism. Are the rear wiper motor mechanisms/gears a serviceable part or is a new motor assembly the only option?

I made my own, which is very bright.

I fitted a new pair to mine this morning too. I like to replace them every 6 months.
I always fit AP aero blades as they are top quality.

Replacement unit only I'm afraid. Mine is also very sloppy. I've adjusted the arm so it stops on the rubber.
