I fill gearbox and IRD fluid from below by shoving a pipe on the little funnel that's on the bottles, then just squeeze it out. When the thing is nearly empty refill from another bottle or swap the lids. Saves a lot of fannying around from above and having half the fluid end up on the floor. Mind it helps having 4 axel stands to keep the car level.
Inspection pit and a syringe for me.
 
You are right there. It is a KV6 and has 125.000km on it now. I'm hoping to get 200,000km out of the Hippo so the IRD should be good till then.
The rest of it? We'll see!

£4600 which I am quite happy with as it is just about top money for a private sale.

GrumpyGel I am getting to know Nodge's posts quite well. Nice guy and he knows his stuff. We both suffer from that special kind of madness that comes from owning MGFs as well as V6 Freelanders and have bumped into each other on MGR.org in the past.

Back from a week away in the old caravan. so feeling energetic.

fuel tank cradle rubbed down and undersealed.

Still got a clonk coming from the front though :rolleyes:

Replaced the PCV filter with the Cyclone type oil separator and fitted new silicone hoses throughout. Good job too: found a pinhole in LH intercooler hose caused by abrasion from the screw underneath. Gave me a chance to have a good look at the loom and leak-off lines at the same time.
 
Fitted a genuine towbar today, just plugged the electrics in and the jobs a goodun!

yep done the same , was a joy to being able to plug and play

apart from I fitted the electrics, put all the panels back then realised I hadn't threaded the cable through the towing bracket hole, doh

also replaced the flasher unit for the heavy duty one
 
Well.....That bit me in the bum!
I made the mistake of commenting on how reliable my KV6 Facelift Hippo has been, and neglected to knock on wood.
Yesterday morning I did my 40km commute to work with no issues and spent a few minutes in the car reading the paper. I was surprised when
I got out and found a large pool of coolant spreading under the engine. The header tank was half empty.
Off came the engine cover and examination with a flashlight showed the engine Vee very wet with coolant. My first thought was it was the
thermostat but it was dry. Checking while running (with the cooling system pressurised) revealed a small jet of water coming from the inner front corner
of the intake manifold where it meets the head.
I did have a go at making it home but after refilling the header tank twice in 10km I parked it. When it had cooled down a bit (just normal cooling, it never overheated).
I had a go at tightening the manifold bolts. The bolts under the manifold are next to impossible to get at with all of the ancillaries in place!
Tightening didn't help so it was tow truck time. That auto club membership finally paid off.
Today I picked up new gaskets, and new O-Rings should be at the dealer on Friday so it looks like it will be a busy weekend. :rolleyes:

I'm guessing it's leaking where the air bleed pipe is connected?
This isn't a common leakage point, but I have seen it. It's often caused by corrosion in the joint face. It can also be caused by the use of gasket sealants being used. These can displace in use, causing leaks.
If you are stripping the manifold off, It's wise to change the thermostat at the same time, unless it's very new. ;)
 
Cleaned up the alloys, and found a tyre puncture.

The alloys were practically coming apart on it so I've just hit them with matte black for now, I hate working with paint, but matte paint is real easy to work with:

Not the biggest fan of black alloy's, but that actually looks quite good. Probably alot better than they were before:)

Honestly, I much prefer silver alloys - but they're an absolute pringle to respray right.
Matt black takes 30 minutes a wheel to do and can be touched up in seconds with a spray can :)

+1 I agree - it does look ok though - just fer fecks sake don't stick a 6 inch exhaust chrome outlet on and wear your baseball cap backwards ;):)

Trouble with black is it makes the wheels look too small (optical illusion) but yeah - I hear ya regarding the upkeep !
