Moved the selector from "4wd" to "2wd"

Shame it takes an hour of swearing to move that lever!

Proves my clonk is definitely suspension related, that'll learn me for fitting a ****part shock absorber *grumble*

(For the record, the widowmaker jack is there as a tertiary backup and NOT as the primary lifting device. There's a trolley jack under there and an axle stand as well.)

It'll get quicker - the trick is not to lift it off the ground. Drive it onto some blocks (or long Hippo Ramps), undo the bolts that are easy access, then roll it along a bit and the others are easy access :)

Also leaves your trolly jack free to lower the VCU on.

The problem wasn't the access, it was the torque the rear bolts were in with. Someone had massively overtightened them to the point where I had all of my (not inconsiderable) weight hanging on a 1m breaker bar and the bolts made a noise like a gunshot when they broke free!

So much quieter without the prop on, the vcu has the bearings with the orange plastic bearing cases on. Someone's been naughty... the rear one was making an unholy racket.
 
Fitted an original radio now the stalk works as does the 6 disc CD player

Spent most of my afternoon stripping the passenger shock down for the second time to diagnose a rattle.

Turns out the brand new britpart topmount is a pile of ****.

Only fitted it because I ran out of time, jokes on me.

This is the second time I've been burned by britpart crap, there will not be a third.
 
full service ready to go on me hols to the south of france 199000 miles will the old girl make it there and back of course she will but still got all singing all dancing breakdown cover just in case;)
 
Had it serviced, along with an engine flush as well as auto-box fluid change. Can hardly hear it now and no jerking on up or down changes.
 
Bought another one! 1.8 petrol. No mot but lots of lovely new parts fitted and a nice body! Anyone needing parts! Contact me please!
 





Diff bearings died on me - lost all drive leaving me stranded in Norfolk. Potentially had low oil in the gearbox. It was whining for about 100 miles beforehand.

For the amount of faults it had, it simply wasn't cost-effective to get it towed 100 miles home, to fit the engine+gearbox from my R45. So now I'm stuck with a stupid Audi that I bought. Donor parts are being put to one side, for the "project" ;)

Played international rescue:


Idiot boy had been running his corsa around for THREE MONTHS with the kind of rattle that makes people recoil on outright horror. Finally gave up in the end, the timing chain was loose and it was causing harmonics in the camshafts. Wrecked the cams and the followers.

I sense a new free runaround for me...
 
So, I was a little busy this last weekend!! Having achieved the unbelievable on eBay, I felt only slightly guilty for obtaining a soft-top, shower curtain, chrome door sills, tow bar with electrics, spare panels, spare sunroof and a boot load of other bits for an absolute bargain price all from one seller whose own Freelander had given up the ghost, it meant Sunday was jam packed with working on, in or under 'Freddie'!! This followed a rather pricey Saturday replacing ALL FIVE tyres!!

Mind you, the results were worth the blood, sweat and tears!!

Oh dear! Hope you'll be on the road with another L Series Freelander soon?
 
The head and pump will be worked on for the "project" along with another hippo gearbox that's sat in the basement. Base vehicle may be the R45 to start with. But may change as we progress (there's a few of us working on it).

When the Audi dies/becomes boring, I'll be looking for another L powered hippo. But one that's not falling apart this time :lol: The faults on this one when I got it now amount to:

speedo dead
ABS dead (sensor? Never got that far tbh)
rear window mech MISSING
rear handle knackered
oil leak on the turbo drain
sunroof rusted solid
hole in the radiator
cracked header tank
dead HG
shagged gearchange link
knackered tyres
central locking kaput
clutch issues (never got round to finishing that...)
a bizarre missfire at idle
IRD abused in the past
VCU+props missing
AC as empty as my soul
 
Repaired/ refurbed my second step, both brackets needed welding at the ends rusted away under the plastic coating....Worth checking yours, mine only showed a few rust bubbles

Done nothing to it - not even got in it. But have been looking for some bits for it and also want this thread to pop up in the new 'Alerts' feed :)
