The glasses holder on the roof is the one bit I haven't done yet as I couldn't figure out how to get it out with pulling all the roof lining down!
Undid the two visible screws, and took the oval clip bit from the middle, but didn't wanna budge. Anything I'm missing?

Weekend head work: trimmed valve seats to match throats, opened up the transition from the throats to the runners, rounded the valve guide ends, lowered the hump in the exhaust runners, port matched both sides, opened up the coolant openings in the head, lapped the valves in.

Coming up- vacuum test valves for seal quality, a thorough clean, reassemble and on she goes!

Yeah the screws from the other side! It's a headlong down job, or at least half down and screwdriver bit in a ratchet thingy!

Been to lidls and then used my dremel......

Not sure of its accuracy tho...... It's flipping hot but I don't think that it is quite that hot.

I saw that the other day in Lidl. I wold have considered it if I hadn't already sorted mine out.

The outside temp really depends on where you put the sensor, and if it is touching something hot!!!! I placed mine where it was touching the wing and it also displayed silly hot temperatures. I moved it to behind the headlight and it seems much more realistic now.

The same applies to the internal temp, but in my experience of that type, the internal temp sensor is built in, and so the sun or the heater will give you false readings as well.

My current ones have separate sensors, so I can place them in sensible places and get a sensible temperature displayed.

Took advantage of the missus being out and finally got round to looking at my Freelander after it broke down a few weeks ago.
Refitted the timing belt in the correct place and re-timed. Rotated the engine on the crank pulley and couldn't hear any horrible sounds. Thought I would try it on the key and no compression :(

Took off the rocker cover and found this:

Took of the next cover and inspected the damage:

At that point I ordered a takeaway and started taking the head off. Ate my dinner under the bonnet whilst working. I didn't have my external torx sockets for the head bolts so had to give up at the last hurdle just before 10 this evening. Try again tomorrow!

i've got external torx mate but you know how far away i am from you, good luck with the rebuild/sourcing replacement bits

Yeah it's safe to say the timing may have been out....slightly! Didn't count how many teeth it was out because I couldn't get the 2 locking pins in without removing what was left of the belt

Thanks freelaner I got some but they are at my toolbox at work. It will have to wait for now but will only take 5 mins tomorrow.

I am pretty sure any old L series head will do if I keep my current injectors? Might even be an opportunity for some sdi injectors!

Feeling your pain! A Rover 220D with electrical problems came up on TradeMe (our Ebay) a couple of days ago for 200 quid. Considered buying it just to hoik the lump out in case anything serious happens to our L Series. Too many hulks in our garden already though and it was snapped up quick.

Took the head off. Wrong tools for the job but got there in the end. Going to have a good bruise on my elbow from my ratchet slipping so many times! Pistons undamaged and valves seem straight. I shall asses the damage to the head a bit more and see whether it's better to put a new head on or price up some cam followers etc

For ease I should think its better to put a new head on but I quite fancy stripping it down

The valves will have damaged stems. Followers take some serious impacts to smash them like that. If the stems are damaged so will the guides. Best find a replacement head, be cheaper and easier in the long run.

+1

it's toast...bin it Kizzeh

Yeah your both right. I rang up and there is a land rover breakers local to me with a head sitting on the shelf for £90. I rang up a good Freelander breakers a couple of hours away and he doesn't really want to split the engine but can do me an engine for not a lot more but it's a couple of hours away and I don't fancy changing an engine on the side of the road.

If I get a new engine I may aswell put a new clutch and cambelt in whilst it's sitting out infront of me.
If I put a new head on I shall of course get a new cambelt but I shall get the head pressure tested and skimmed. So much of a muchness on price really I suppose

All the bloody spares I have but I don't have a spare head!

Fitted rear right ABS sensor and cleared 3 amigo's on the dash.
Makes me a very happy lad haha! :D

Now just to get my new keyfob encoded so I can get in the boot!
I don't suppose anyone in the Manchester area has the software for doing my keyfob?
