I think the damper bottom nut was loose for some time, probably Years - original unit FFS….

Dilemma - strap in the new damper and pretend it’s fine or figure out a fix to stop it wandering about…..

Thoughts?

I put a new axle saddle on mine, wasnt dear 15/20 quid rings a bell.
Cheap 50/100 quid stick welder will do that job just fine, marketplace decent place to look.

Thinking I might drop in a piece of bar to centralise the damper bottom pin, the clamping force between the washers/bushes will keep it located. Bit of a redneck solution but it will get me mobile!

Could you just put 1 of them washers in the hole & add some weld to hold it in position?
Unsure if you should do the same to the lower washer as well
Adding the weld is the tricky bit - no metal gluing capability at Slomofo acres….

Will get it back together then trundle to a man that can :)

Didn’t realise how much of a b’stard having the anti-roll bar is when trying to fight the springs out - axle doesn’t drop far enough, grrrrr. Spring compressors only just did the job!

Agree. It was a job involving lots of swearing, spring compressors and a large trolley jack on my old disco 1.

Finally got the Drivers side spring out, the damper is another story - cut off the bottom nut but the top nut is rusted/jammed, handily tucked under the expansion tank :)
Beer called as it’s 18deg here, so attacking with windy gun tomorrow…….

Glacial progress, but progress…..

I just did mine and took the expansion tank out. There’s enough pipe to leave it connected though. I ended up getting gas grips on the strut to get the bolts undone.

Another basket case - you’ll get it sorted, sell it and buy another bucket of problems :D

Borrowed a MIG, after some hillbilly welding, much grinding and liberal use of paint to cover the quality of the result we have a serviceable saddle on the N/S. Cut the nut off the top of the stubborn O/S damper with the angle grinder and now ready to reassemble over the weekend….

Thinking of flogging this one when it’s all done and buying a Porsche - different kind of pain…. :)
