Hey guys,

Wondering what the best oil to use is!? The engine has 144k miles on it and its the BMW 2004 4.4 V8.

Currently has 5w - 30 fully synthetic in but it's rattling on startup.

Thanks in advance

Think rattle on start up is a well-known feature of the V8 petrol and nothing to worry about. It is the tappets before the oil get to them I think (Saint V8 put me right?)

My 4.4 V8 gets Triple R or Fuchs 5W40 fully synth. (Triple R part no. was XGF 050 - £25 for 5 Ltr: Fuchs £32 for 8 Ltrs)

Depends on the rattle - Tapping is normal while the Hydraulic Valve Lifters pump up again with oil flow...but a 'Chain' type rattle is usualy the VANOS chain rattling on the guide....

VANOS is the BMW Name for the Variable Valve Timing System and has a stupidly long German name, it uses a chain and guide controlled by a small actuator to vary the valve opening times.

Ont he early M62 engines the guides where made from cheese and wear out, the later ones where a bit more robust.

Trouble is to get rid of the rattle is to replace the VANOS system complete (although I have heard reports of just changing the guide - but unconfirmed) which can get fiddley and expensive apparently!

5W40 fully synthetic in mine. 150k on the clock and if left a good while will give a momentary rattle, but otherwise runs like clockwork. I would expect to hear a constant rattle at tickover if the VANOS is playing up. As Saint says the chain tensioners can be a little soft and changing these can be a bit of a cow, but I`m sure if we wait long enough, Saint will have a "how to" to guide us through:D

I use mobil 1 10w 60 extended life. Just done my 4.4 (165k) and seems to be ok. Also ive replaced the chain tensioner, this could help with the rattle you have also. It just screws into the side of the timing chain cover. Look on you tube, the bmw boys put lots of good stuff on there!

The popular choice seems to be 5w40 fully synthetic. Is it worth using the Lucas Oil Products (UK) - Heavy Duty & High Performance Lubricants Lucas Oil Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer with the new oil when doing the oil change?

How much oil is needed for an oil and filter change on the 4.4 v8 engine?

Somebody else asked that, and was told 20 litres. Then he came back and said i bought 20 litres and have 11.5 litres left. The bloke that told him 20 litres said, "That's funny, so did I".
