Hi all,

This is my first post so hope its in the right location.
I'm thinking of getting a Freelander but money is tight. So I was thinking of around a 2000-2001 model. That said, I have read (fron my uneducated viewpoint) some horror stories about head gaskets going, overheating problems, white sludge etc etc...

So the question is, what should I buy keeping the above in mind and / or what do I look for when I go to view something? I'm not that botheres if its diesel or petrol, but is it ifair to make the assumption that the above issues are generally only related to a petrol engine?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Ok, thanks for that. So is it fair to say that I should avoid that model for those specific years, but if I do get one, get a diesel? Can I assume that based on the comment re teh Discovery, the two are very different beasts - excluding looks of course?!

depends what you want to do. if you are looking for a 4x4 but staying on the roads then a doozil freebie could be ok but have a look in the freelander section for other common faults (vcu comes to mind)

a disco wont be as economical (or maybe even as comfortable) but if you are considering green laning or off road driving then it would be a much better choice.

i had a 109 series 3,a v8 disco and now got a 2000 1.8 freelander and ive loved them all!i made sure that i bought 1 with head gasket done and i love driving it,i think like any car you buy you never know so buy what you like and drive it!as for the freelander 4x4 i was really surprised with mine as i found some good mud the other day and it ploughed through it and i even drove it in a shallower part of a river!! enjoy whatever you get just make sure it has the green oval on the front lol

The popular choice is a later (facelift) TD4 Auto model. Which I happen to have

Petrol are know for blowing gaskets, both 1.8 and V6. Manuals are said to have a weak clutch.

L type engines are said to be bomb proof though the gearing ratio was poor for VCU/IRD. This was sorted out in later models.

My Auto is 5 speed and ideal for cruising. Autobox is less hassle at low speeds when greenlaning. I would also suggest you invest in a Tuning module, cheaper than re-map of ECU which perks up the low rev range.

ps I have owned a 110 County V8 and Disco. While both were enjoyable in their own right, the Hippo is more practical for my needs and just as much fun!
