That's tough, sadly it's something that we all get to suffer as we get into old age, I have lost 4 good friends in the last few years so I know a little of how you feel.

I always feel sorry for the ones that get left behind. Sorry to read this news mate. I lost my dad last year to long term illness, he's in a good place now but his best friend is still a bit lost. I still keep in touch with him as he's been constant throughout my life. The great part is that I'm still learning the things my old man got up to in his younger days, had he still been here I may not have got the stories. It's not a replacement but it is a great way to remember him.

Enjoy the memories and tell the stories, keep him with you always.

Did a bit of work on the new (to me) 4.4 today. It has had an alarming rattle on the front end and if you brake sharply you could feel the wheels coming back to meet you! Radius arm bushes were shot to bits but the bottom ball joint on the driver's side was a whole new level of destroyed, it had about 4mm of up and down movement in the cup, I think that may have been the worst noise that I was hearing.

I drove it on the motorway for the first time the other evening and when changing lanes on the bumpy concrete surface I can only describe the feeling of it as it being a shopping trolley with one rogue wheel flapping around. You might expect that with worn bushes etc. but what I didn't expect was to still be feeling 3-4 seconds after it started, in short it was borderline terrifying.

I might mention that I bought this car as a trade sale from a local dealer as needing work with known issues fully disclosed and I had every opportunity to look at it and test it so I knew there were issues. I've owned it almost a week and I'm working through them as quickly as possible. When it's done it is going to be superb.

There's not a lot of rubber in there to start with when new😵‍💫 they are indeed a little tired😔

Don't forget the suspension needs to be at normal height before you tighten them up. :)

That's the worst part of the job isn't it, especially on the driveway. I can either have it on the floor or I can tighten the bolts!

I use a bottle jack under the bottom ball joint and when it starts to lift the car off the axle stand that's about the same as having it on the floor and then you tighten them. Failing that you can get really good at doing the job as you'll need to do it every week if you tighten those bushes with the wheels hanging!

I even remembered that I hadn't reconnected a height sensor before I dropped it off the stands and started it so, Go Me!

Got an underboost fault as soon as I went off up the hill though so I think I might be on my way to understanding why the DPF was full and what might have caused it (been there with the RRS). Anyone know which pipes split on the 4.4 diesel? 3.6's are easy (I have experience of that too :)). I may as well order some as if it's not now it will be soon enough and preventative maintenance can be done when the sun is shining.

Check the four short hoses between the 'doughnut' and the inlet manifold / camshaft covers, oily residue usually gives it away - if they look OK, check the manifolds for splits. Sometimes it can be a correlation fault if the inlet pipes are not fitted correctly rather than a charge air leak.
 
Had a smell of diesel for a few days now but couldn't see where it was coming from til this morning. Twas coming out of the middle of the FIP. Took it to Shaun's my local P38 mechanic and parts supplier. He cleaned everything up and confirmed my fears, it was leaking from the middle joint. No fears he has a guy who does FIP repairs for him and got him on the blower. New seal/gasket kit ordered and as soon as it arrives next week the old gals going straight in for repairs. I feel safe in the knowledge she's being repaired by people who know what they are doing with the P38:)
 
Soooo, today I didn't do anything yet... But the plan is to do two things today amd over the week-end: replace the second temp senstive carb thingy (I'll be damned if I could remember the name of this without looking it up!), the easy bit. And, number two, the trickey bit of figuring out why the fuel pump isn't getting any.

Working theories: a blockage in the fuel lone between the reservoir and the pump or a blockage in the tank itself. Any ideas how I can get rid of number two when the tank is full amd the car in my drive way? Or can it be something else?

After breakfast, some workshop manual reading it is!
