hi to all:)
today it was time to get dirty and annoyed by way of changing the front vertical link rods, easy..
then the anti roll bar bushes..mission.
the rubber bushes had managed to vulcanize themselves to the anti roll bar, absolutely no chance they were going to budge so out came the liquid spanners.:p
while the neighbors fill the air with the smell of BBQ, i was polluting the air with the smell of burning l322, priceless!:D
a considerable amount of time passed before the little f@ckers let go and i was able to clean off the residues and refit new bushes.:mad:
before i started, everything was fine apart from occasional subtle da donk now and again, once the weight and link rods were off the car, the bushes appeared to have the consistency of a flip flop,
glad i did those jobs, as meticulous maintenance is next to godliness:rolleyes:
i haven't taken any pics of the job
but i do have the pictures of my rear wheel arches..remember this is a 2005 model year..:eek:
as @kds says..yours is the exception to the rule.:D.

Serviced another 6 tappets. All those from the right had bank where the gasket had blown were OK - a bit varnished, dirty oil and a bit sooty but cleaned up fine. Started on the left bank ones and at least 4 are noticeably marked / worn on the bottom faces plus more internal wear. So I am guessing that is 4, maybe 8 new tappets. Hoping they run OK with the existing cam. Odd that they are all on one bank, but I presume it indicates a mild oil starvation at some point to them which caused them to run dry(er) than they should. Worst ones look to be on 1 and 7, 3 and 5 look less worn. Only discovered once it was dark and drizzling, so close inspection of the cam will have to wait until tomorrow.
On the plus side I have now got the strip, clean, reassemble time down to around 10 minutes a unit.

Blocked oil channel doesn't sound good. That sounds like the sort of thing that needs sorting before reassembly or you'll be chewing cams next.

Generally not a good idea to put new followers on an old Cam..

Especially if the surface of the camshaft is marred, this will prevent the follower from rotating and you'll wear the follower out in no time at all ;)

Also worth noting discoloration, if the surface of the cam is starting to turn a bronze/brown colour then it needs to be pulled. ;)
 
Got my new instrument cluster, installed it, still no oil pressure light. An old thread on here seemed to lean towards oil pressure switch being dead and in turn sending no signal to the becm thus cannot illuminate the bulb. I figured they'd fail on, rather than off, but heyho. 8 quid a pop isn't too bad to find out. On the plus I now have a spare cluster which I can practise opening up to pimp out the dials. :cool:;)

blew out a load of rust powder....

and with the help of some of this equivalent I squirted some around the shaft as deep as I could ooh eerr... And rotated the hub allowing the loctits to be drawn into the splines. Then back on with the lock nut and staked into place..
Other than stripping the whole rear brake assembly and removing the hub so to put the loctits onto the base of the shaft :rolleyes: also having to reseal the axle casing end... Errrr, this was my first attempt but you never know... Watch this space:D

Aware new / old mix of either parts isn't ideal on cam / follower combo.

Had a good look at the cam today and there is no obvious wear / pitting / nicks / etc on the cam on any lobe, for either bank. There is a little gold / bronze haze on all the lobes, mainly flanks and base circle areas, on both the good and bad tappet lobes. But if someone has shown me the cam and said "8 good and 8 worn tappets running on this, which were where?" I wouldn't have been able to tell.

These are the 8 worn looking tappets. We aren't in a position to do the dismantling / work needed to change the cam at the moment - not a mechanical issue but a social / practical / location and workspace issue. So I would say that spending about £30 now and budgeting on a cam change at a chosen point by our local trusted mechanic would be a better bet. Especially as everything we can get to will be cleaned / copper greased on reassembly so quicker and easier for them to do what they need on that.

Argh this LPG is driving me nuts!! I can't get it sorted at all :( bank 2 is running too rich (negative trim) and when i switch back to petrol i have to reset the values so it runs properly

My god those gubbing screws are a nightmare. Were all different sizes had to use 2 sacrificial sockets get them out in one piece :oops: fashion new ones so holes align, turbo pipes off to get AF spanner and my gigantic banana hands in there. Didn’t kink the micro bore? :confused:
would have been so nice to just chop it off but in one piece gives @Bix more options. If you still need front calliper it’s here ready for you just need to find a box?
Axle seal that side looking bit leaky :( looks like the springs will come out without too much of a battle and UJ clips are starting to pop out so not all bad :)
