Did you ever work out why the piston hit the valve?
No buddy and TBH i don't really care now as its the selling dealers problem now as he is refunding me in full plus hopefully some compo on top ( His decision not mine ) All i know is the engine is toasted and needs a full rebuild or replacement and again i ain't bothered anymore.
There could have been many issues which caused it but i suppose we will never really for sure know.

Going to a dealer doesn't mean you're getting a decent car. Sure, you might stand a better chance of getting your money back but then you're back to square one. Again.

It does feel like you're searching for a unicorn in a field of horses. If nothing else, this purchase has shown you that mileage, history, dealer (or not) is absolutely no guarantee that you'll get a good specimen that will give you minimal hassle.

Who's to say the next one won't have a similar issue (if diseasel) or the petrol variant you go for doesn't have another undiagnosed problem that makes it go pop within a few weeks?

P38 ownership really isn't about ignorance, you have to go in balls deep and know these arseholes inside out. Once you do, spotting the problems is a lot easier and therefore, the remedies are easier.

I still learn things when I start fiddling with it be it asking questions on here or from actually doing the spannering. Can't help but think while you have a decent budget to spend, you're still going to find disappointment somewhere along the line that could have been avoided if, perhaps, you went for something that at first appeared 'less' desirable.

Still..... a single piston hitting its valve(s) is a new one on me, and I'd have loved to know how it came about, but as we're destined not to find out all I'll say is I hope your refund goes smoothly and that you find yourself an example much more worthy of your care and attention (of which there will be much!) going forward, whether it be a 4.0, 4.6 or 2.5!

Chain tensioner not an issue on M51. Chain stretch can be but usually they're OK till 200k according to Dopey's Polish guru, although you might need a hotfix earlier, especially on early models.
 
Jumped a cog would be likely, considering the low mileage (if accurate) more likely was put together wrong.
You got unlucky there @Enthusiastman they are usually pretty bullet proof, always wary of Turner
But he got VERY lucky getting a full refund plus some extra. That dealer needs to be named,:) we're usually quick to ask to name and shame. He deserves a pat on the back, who could have foreseen the problem given the history.

Like is said before, It aint my problem anymore so i don't give a flying f**k now what, where or how it caused it. As long as he gives me my monies back which he is doing then thats all i care about for now. It will be my choice entirely if i decide to buy another or not.
Not being funny myself either but once its all sorted i will give you the dealers name etc and if it bothers you that much to want to know then you can go and see him and satisfy your curiosity buddy that way.

Indeed yes buddy. Maybe it was cursed after it had the famous Turner's re-map done by the previous owner. I don't know and again TBH i don't care anymore as its going and my monies is being refunded.

One thing i will never do is buy a scruffy looking P38 no matter how good its been maintained. The sub 6k cars are just NOT for me i have to say. We all have differing budgets in life too.

Once its all completed i will say who and where he is albeit after changing his tune these last few days towards me in a positive way then he does deserve some credit albeit i still think deep down he knew it was about to let go BUT not as quickly as it did. I think he was praying for 3 months of grace of which then i would have had no re-course at all with him but 1 week and less than 100 miles i did.
