Hello All, about a month ago I replaced the serpentine belt and tensioner on my P38 Vqgue, thinking it would cure the annoying whine, it didn't so I thought must be the idler below, as I was going on holiday a couple of days later I lived with it, until last weekend after spending 5hrs waxing it, I thought I've got to get rid of that noise, spoils the effect. So I ordered a new idler in steel from LR Series fitted it earlier, what a difference! had to check the rev counter to make sure it was actually running! the old plastic one had worn dangerously thin, strange though it was listed as a timing belt idler, part no PQR500060, the V8 doesn't have one?

Bonnet off, scuttle off (all on me own) and only managed to brake the bonnet light. Checked wiper motor and lubed everything. Cleaned all the leaves, droppings and general crap out. Sorta stumped now so just ordered a new wiper motor and wiper trailing arms.

well done lorri, :)

With the help of a member on here I got my non-starting heap off the main road and onto my drive ready to swear profusely at the starter motor bolts on Saturday.

I helped a fellow member get his non starting P38 off the road and onto his driveway. :)

Earlier in the day, I fixed my drivers window which was starting to struggle to go up by drilling out a rattly rivet and replacing it with a proper nut, bolt and washers, and fitted a replacement door card.

Hoping my new pulleys & tensioner will turn up in time to fit at the weekend. Everything with a bearing on mine is deciding it doesn't want to play anymore:(

Just sold the wifes SLK.:) Now she's commandeered the Rangie until her new car's ready....just waiting for something to go wrong :(

She's getting the new Merc CLA AMG, needs a little more practicality with the new arrival due in Oct.

PS, she quite likes the P38 (thankfully after all the cash thrown at it this year), :)she still prefers the L322 though :(

Nice choice! I'm a big fan of Mercs, really good cars usually, especially now they've rediscovered some of their engineering quality.

I hope it serves her (and junior!) well. :)

pistons do protude thats why you get choice of head gasket thickness, pitting more like poor head gasket or cracked head if it is water damage

the gaskett was a 3 hole gaskett the pistons are seriously protruding i had it checked by a bmw specalist who said he never witnessed such protrusion. when removing the head i did notice that 4 of the headbolts were loose. also piston one at tdc when i rock it with my hand it is slapping off the cylinder, which explains the puff of blue/white smoke after starting. thats why im going for a full rebuild into a good block the head has been pressure tested and skimmed, and a set of ring should sort me out

Mine does that, I put it down to a tired motor but will check the rivets now :D

I made one into a lightweight open top version :D

Just done mine. Seems to have developed a slight chirpy noise but think it's probably just the new belt, will hopefully bed in. Still SORN'd at the mo, but house move coming up, a great excuse to put it back on the road.

Checked oils and fluids, tyre pressures and took her for a quick 10 mile blast to blow out the cobwebs from being standing for 4 days. Happy days.

Cleaned up the four hurricane alloys I bought recently in preparation for painting them. I'm thoroughly looking forward to eventually getting them on the car as my black wheels are NOT growing on me.

Mulling over what tyres to put on these wheels when I'm done doing them up. If only there was a thread about tyres... ;)
