Are the brake disc retaining screws on P38s made of chocolate? I've done three corners now and I've had to drill every one of the f*ckers. Not holding my breath for number 4.

Yep. Plusgas and then a punch and a hammer to tap them round. New screws in and never tighten more than using tips of fingers. Ot is only to hold it straight until you get the wheel nuts done up but some people seem to think it holds the wheel on.

That's all four wheels with new pads, discs and calipers. The very last slide pin was stuck, put the end in the vice and ****ted the carrier with a hammer and it freed off. Bit worried about the thick black grease all over the LH rear disc and pads. If it was the front I'd say a cv boot had gone. Hub and bearing seem fine.

Fluid from the diff?

Bled the brakes. Of course, today is the first day in three months the missis had to go into work. So I made a deadman out of a bit of 2x1 and a G clamp.

Worked a treat. I had no idea how bad those brakes were until I test drove it down to Sainsbury's. Pressed the brake as normal and nearly went through the windscreen.
 
Well it's been a while been very busy.
Old faithful has been good piling on the miles like no tomorow.
Done alot of miles with trailer on too.
Issue free apart from my stereo has decided everytime I turn it off it loses only its bass and treble settings.
Spare back ends all rebushed well subframe and wishbone are done. il be reusing my outer hubs but rebushing and new bearings when the time comes.
2 rear bags and shocks to order and everything on the back end will be new.
Front end I have new lower arms and ball joints.
Mot next month so somepoint before then.
Had the dreaded still trims off few bubbles but nothing that didn't grind back to clean metal it was all solid.

Wheel wise I'm still on the rrs 19s with general grabber at3s getting low now 2.5 of tread left (yes I know td6s should have 18s) but iv found no issue with it.
Found an identical set for sale locally but with pirelli scorpion tyres on more road bias for what I do. And in better condition so picking them up friday.
 
Changed the oil on a 2.5 DHSE quite a nice motor..

Apart from the old oil having 30k on it.. :rolleyes: :confused:

needs a few flushes to clear her out..
 
It was in a TSB somewhere. Next time I am in my garage I will dig out the bottle. Green high temperature stuff.
We used to use the green on boilers and steam pipes years ago. Once had a foreman who had a head gasket blow on way to Whitby and did a temporary repair on North York Moors with a tin of green to get him home. We couldn't split the head from block afterwards
 
P38A (How do you get one of those white boxes at the start of your posts?) With the lockdown easing and still revelling in the good results of LZ advice on my EAS I decided to move on with the next round of 'project P38.'

Bought a pair of transmission oil cooler pipes and a CV joint and then, when I learned that Promec, our local indie, was emerging from hibernation, decided it was wiser to let them do what are apparently pretty fiddly jobs. A transmission oil/filter change got added to the workload and I ended up spending more than anticipated but the transmission is much smoother now and I've finally eliminated every last drip of oil onto the driveway.

Today, I changed the engine oil and filter which must have gone smoothly because it is only lunchtime and already I've moved on to the next job - investigating a non working electric window at passenger side front. Centre console dismantled and doorcard off I am still getting nowhere so the next step is a plea for help posting elsewhere on the page.
 
Had a horrible noise coming from the front accessories..

Both the alternator and tensioner were knackered...

old one in the video!



New DAYCO one was a complete piece of shít out the box, brand new and totally ****ed.

New one had more play than the old one!!

Still got a nice new alternator!! ;) :)

Alternator bearings? Easy enough to fit new bearings, so don't chuck the old one.
