Changed pollen filters and air filter. Also looked at my noisy compressor, turned out that the wrong washer was fitted to the rear mount causing it to vibrate through the mounting bolt. Changed for a more appropriate washer and much quieter!

All the washers on the compressor mounts should be dished. Lower ones dish down, upper ones dish up. Rear mount should have a small plastic spacer about 4 mm thick that goes on before the dished washer. Nuts are loctited and just nipped to 1.5 to 2 Nm.

Thanks. Looks like the spacer is missing as it did have a dished washer but for some reason it was catching the compressor. Will have a closer look to it.

In other news, my suspicions were correct in that the late spec P38 Navigation system is the same as BMW (and indeed early L322's) and that the BMW Mk3 unit is in and working well (with my 2001 land rover disk!) the only problem is that as it came from a BMW it has options for Television and computer etc which do nothing on a P38.
 
Resprayed radiator grill and cleaned up cooling fans.

Fitted all of the upper tailgate trim and tested all wipers and washer jets - all working fine.

Removed Interlock, (XYZ Switch), and re-soldered all cables, (were joined with crimped 'bullet connectors and then wrapped in a length of Duck Tape - AWFUL!), and hope to install and align later today.

Still need to service drivers side door lock, replace/repair door amp, sort HIVAC blower issues, (no blowers!), remove and re-cover headlining, repair 2 x holes in rear boot area.

Looking to purchase an electric Polisher/Buffer in order to try and resurrect the lustre of the paintwork, (all panels are ok with no dings or dint's but LOTS of 'off roading' and 'green laning' scratches - everywhere!

This is the only car where I will be taking a scrubbing brush to the underside and the engine bay as it is completely caked in clay/mud that will not wash off - anybody know of any cleaning agents that will help me get it off?

Taxed and insured the beast, earlier this morning, so the frequency of my future posts will probably rise dramatically!!

Would have been nice to be able to collect my wife from hospital in it - but may not be a good idea as we will probably find ourselves broken down by the side of the A16!!!
 
Replaced rear number plate bulb.

Wish I had a dishwasher as I'd put that whole assembly in to clean up the covers.
 
Replacement fuel flap switch arrived yesterday but I didn't get in till 11 so thought better of working on the car so gutted this morn. Then went to move her to the end of the drive for the mechanic to pick up and take for the mot this where it went tits up. Flat tyre hmm dug the pump outta the boot to pump up. Then suspension wouldn't rise on start up quick check of fuses OK short reply and pump runs but ran outta time and had to go to work. Will have a look when I get home tonight hope it's easy to sort.
 
Not the best start to the week as I managed to lose the garage and gate keys yesterday, (possibly picking up my wife from hospital), although I was able to refit the newly resprayed radiator grill - which looks very good, (just a pity about the rest of the car)!

Today not much better as, (after a morning of shopping), my Jeep Grand Cherokee power steering hose arrived but it was not the correct one so I then diverted my attention to the RR.

As she is now taxed and insured I decided to finish off the gear shift linkage and the alignment of the XYZ Switch but my previous bout of carelessness struck again as I could not find the transmission lever mounting nut anywhere!!!!!

It is not a standard M8 thread so none of my countless stocks of metric nuts and bolts would fit and I was starting to get quite worried but, (after delving into my cheap tap and die set), I measured the thread pitch on the threaded shaft and it was M8 1.0mm so I re-threaded one of my standard M8 nuts and it worked!

Ran out of time to align XYZ Switch so will hopefully have this sorted tomorrow and may then the the beast out for her first road test.

My £2.99 door amp module arrived just as it was getting dark so I quickly popped out again to test that it worked - it did - and it was good to note that I had not misplaced the entire car!
 
Drove the Red one and looked at the Black one, will get around to sorting it next month when I get back, off to the sun on Thursday.:D:D:D:D:D
 
Took it out for its first run out today!!!!!!!!

Treated it to £15 of petrol, (enough to get the fuel gauge needle off the endstop)!

It started ok, (it always starts first time).

Gearbox appears to be ok, (auto box changes all ok and kickdown ok), but XYZ alignment has slipped - suspect that there is too much 'play' in Tranny selector lever on side of box, (nearly as much play as there is adjustment on the switch)!!

Also noted that I have had to screw out the locating pin right towards the end of the threaded pushrod, (which is definitely not right), so perhaps my slotted lever arm is not the right part?

Transfer Box appears ok, (Low and Hi ranges appear ok).

Steering appears ok, (no wobbles or undue vibrations), but wheel well off centre so will need to remove and realign, (will also need to clean gummed up steering wheel controls), any tips, (other than to disconnect the battery to avoid setting off airbag)?

Suspension appears ok, (still not sure how to change it - will re-read owner handbook), but surprised it didn't produce errors previously as the front driver side ride height sensor linkage was disconnected!

All windows, mirrors, seats and sunroof work via the multitude of buttons!

Engine appears ok and pulled well but I didn't push it too hard, (not with the chunky off road tyres that are currently fitted to the wheels), drove for about 25 minutes and temp gauge remained in the first third of the scale?

Even the heater worked even though the HIVAC system has some problems, (handbook appears on display), and I am sure the blowers should be much stronger?

I also made a very quick visual check of the AC Compressor clutch - which told me it was not engaging - possibly just a re-gas - if I am really lucky??

The only major issue was that the CD skipped occasionally - will need to check that it is set for horizontal use!

Very pleased that my efforts have been worthwhile although the paintwork is in a bad way - will be purchasing some polishing gear next month in attempt to remove/reduce the worst scratches.

The trip to the breakers yard can be put off - for at least another month!

Steering wheel of center might be drag link adjustment needed. On my last P38 when it was changed the steering wheel was miles out, quick adjustment and it was no problem again.

Many thanks for your suggestion - I have yet to fully acquaint myself with the suspension/steering components - but will read up the relevant sections in RAVE!

I do need to remove the steering wheel airbag, (as I need to try and repair the various switches - most of which I am hoping are simply 'gummed up' with the same muck that was liberally splattered all around the interior), so I will start here but will also take a look at the steering linkages to see if there are any obvious signs of inequality in the settings.

Might have to wait till the weekend as I will be servicing a 5 channel LED Floodlight Dimming Controller, (of my own design), that I installed in a local barn last year and I will then be hoping to see the new 'Dad's Army' film in the afternoon!

Ironically the 'beast' may start to earn it's keep, (tomorrow), as I am hoping to pick up a chest freezer, (it should easily fit in the rear of the truck), en route the cinema!

- Side repeater has discolouration (its muck in the lens)
- steering hose has a slight leak, apparently.
- slight play in shock absorber bush
- slight oil leak (don't remember seeing one but will check)

And can't remember the last one!

I'd say most of those were factory features!
