Sorry i should have elaborated, when i put it into drive it was back to normal.. no issues for the rest of the day.
I thought if there was any gearbox problem it was supposed to lock into 3rd.. not go to neutral
Yep you should of gotten the "gearbox fault" and dreaded "beep" ;)

Could of been the XYZ switch having a funny moment.
 
If the cleaner doesn't work scatter the stain with cheap biological washing powder and leave, you may need to dampen it if hasn't rained.;)

It's raining cats and dogs, probably will for the next week, too. It looked reasonably clean, if you ask me. What my wife thinks of it, well, maybe the next project is replacing portions of the pavement!

The shift linkage connects to it and when you shift it sends the PNRD321 signal to the computer.
The ZF on the P38 in your case is the HP22EH the solenoids inside are electronically controlled, as you'd imagine they need info ;)
Mine had an issue of where Reverse wouldn't engage, a quick thrash up and down the gate fixed that issue! ;)

. And dirty, half my hair is a mix of sand and oil...

Sounds like first time my mate introduced me to his then girlfriend, now wife. 5 minutes earlier I was just a bit grubby, changing 15 year old fork old on my XJ550.

Second leg wouldn't play, didn't want the plug to let go of the detent. Tried lube, belting it with a hammer and drift, all sorts. Nada.

Finally gave up and thought "Well the retaining circlip is out, and that is what stops fork compression pushing the spring out of the top of the leg, so pump the fork and it should pop". Considered injury risk and did it from the side, not leaning over it - didn't want a about 1 1/4" deep / round circular steel plug at speed in the mush.

Hadn't considered what could happen to all the fork internals stirred up by this, or where I was. One, two, three pumps and the plug let go. Loud spang noise, and a shower plus a hefty fork spring. I'd been working just under the edge of the up and over door, so I got clobbered on the head by a rebounding spring while being doused in the shower back of about 1/2 litre of disgusting manky stenching fork oil.

And then my mate appeared with his girlfriend. And I'm kneeling there covered in gunk. And after that she still married him and they are both still good friends.

Noticed another oddness today, again accelerating, got to about 50 and it changed gear and immediately changed straight back again within 1/2 sec, just enough for the revs to dip
 
I'm lucky I just rake gravel over my messes ;)

My torque converter has always locked up in 2 steps.. dunno if that's normal or not.. revs drop then 1/4 sec later they do again.. deffo the TC and not a gear change
