Wrestled the spark plugs back in. Need to find / make a 2-3" extension as none means no clearance but 6" means it won't fit. Run it up tomorrow while everything is cool to see if we have blow by issues.
 
Nose blow? Or...
Nose blow with sobs if it turns out to be duff rings and lots of blow by.

Given the other compressions I'm hoping for no blow by, just needing to get the full valves / guides / springs / etc kit refurb set. RPI show that for £165. That plus head gaskets and stud kit will (fingers crossed and all other superstitious malarkey) see Otto purring sweetly again soon.
 
Hi all,

Recently new to the site, thank you all for your help/advice/suggestions/feedback so far, I feel I owe people loads of tea and biscuits already!
I bought my 2002 L322 a couple of weeks ago and was really looking forward to getting stuck in and getting bits fixed and generally working on the car (I'm not really mechanically minded, so am happy to tackle the smaller things and have the bigger things done at a garage).

So far have managed to fix the following things:

- Instrument cluster LCS (dodgy pixels) - Have replaced with a new LCD and ribbon and it now works!
- Console painting (was peeling) - Have painted the centre console, gear shift and air vent trims
- New battery - Just looking at drain issues at the moment
- Outside temperature reading -40C - Easy fix, cable had come loose
- Removed dodgy window tinting - Had become wrinkled and peeling off

Still got loads to do (cosmetic and mechanical) such as :

- Replace dented side step bars
- Repair cracked bumper
- Repair paintwork - Has loads of scratches
- Replace chrome grill with black
- Replace side vents (chrome for black)
- A huge list of mechanical stuff the garage has given me :-(

Really enjoying ownership so far! Thanks again to all that have helped with the questions I've posted!

Attached some virtual tea and biscuits to start paying off my debt :)

Not today but yesterday the Boss talked me out of going to look at a 4.4tdv8 ,why buy an expensive car more on the insurance and twice as much road tax just to have it sitting on the drive.:rolleyes::( So we went and bought her a BMW 320 coupe to replace the Xtype.:rolleyes::rolleyes: and dropped off a wheel at my mates to have a slow puncture repaired,,I found a 10mm bolt sans head stuck in the tread.:rolleyes:
 
Well... I picked trusty rusty p38 up from the garage after a 4 month holiday and spa session .
Old girl was overheating and considerably incontinent. Heads skimmed and new valve guides. new timing chain, water pump. radiator and seals etc. running sweet and cool now on what is local record temp of 29 degrees c.
If only it didn't look such a heap.
 
Again nothing, oil changes all around and gaskets are scheduled for Saturday so. Also I plan to clean it, didn't have time since the last outing and the rain doesn't reach underneath to clean the mud out.

I did repair two bike tires so.
 
Blow by out the PCV system, oil filler cap is a good place to start does she pull a vaccum or try to blow the cap off?
Checked today - no discernable vacuum, nor pressure, even when revved up a bit. That makes me feel a lot more hopeful about the rings / bores.

Will get the head refresh kit anyway - at least then I know that job is done. And if delivery for everything is good then it will be here while I have time off work to keep me out of mischief.

Today I removed the dash instrument cluster and all through the gear leaver etc to see if there were any loose connections that may have been causing issues for the dash lights not working. Nope. Everything was good. I looked to RAVE for further guidance then went back to the car and tried the switch on the left indicator stalk. Nothing. I truly am at a loss. All of the bulbs are fine as I removed and tested each of them on a previous occasion. The fuse is also good. All of the instruments are still working as well, just lighting up. I think I mentioned before that now the airbag fault is permanently on as well, yet, I haven't even touched that. :confused:
Does anyone know if Obi-Wan Kenobi is here to help me? He seems to be the go-to guy in all galaxies, so I've heard anyway. :(

Seriously though, can anyone help me, please? Obviously, I need these to be working properly.

Yesterday wifey and I finished underneath topping up the oils etc. all uni joints greased up as well and everything else under there that needs to be greased has been.

I know it's a bit obvious but have you checked the brightness control dial on the right of the dash.

My airbag light was caused by a bad connection on the yellow plugs on the battery disconnect unit.

EDIT: Showed on diags as battery disconnect unit fault.

Do you mean the button for resetting the odometer? If so, that doesn't turn at all. There is nothing else there. I don't recall it ever having done so in the 3 years I have owned the car and this issue has only started in the last month. I reset the odometer every time I refill with LPG, which is pretty much every week.

That only presses on mine. Dimmer switch is on top of left stalk
