I hear what Davey1000 is saying but his frustrating experience has not been mine.

I have worked on loads of TDi 300 engines and replaced many lift pumps. Once replaced they have never, ever gone faulty again, so imo something else is going on.

If the fuel sedimenter is not checked regularly it can and does get cacked up with gunk and causes running problems.

Also it is not unknown for the metal type fuel connectors on the top of the in-tank fuel sender to rust and pin-hole, causing running problems.

A properly serviced TDi 300 in std trim with a lift pump is probably the best and most reliable diesel engine Land Rover or for that matter anyone, has ever built.

If anyone dislikes LR products so much then all I would suggest is buy something else, don't tie yourself in knots of frustration - move on.

Until recently I was doing lots of work with Toyota Land Cruisers and there is no doubt that it is a very good product. However it is not perfect.

Would not disagree, my first TDI 300 only let me down once in 14 years ( engine wise) cracked elbow joint on the diesel return which dumped about 3/4 gallons on the M1, that's why I bought the current 300 TDI, but it definitely needs a bit TLC
 
I bought a 200tdi defender for a full restoration. i thought the only good part was the engine. it started every time, 1st time . then the other day it spluttered to a halt. i thought it had run out of fuel. nothing in the filter, bubbles at the injectors. i took the pipes off the lift pump and nothing would come through from the tank. i checked all the pipes etc but still nothing. i put a suction pump on the bleed valve on the filter and managed to get fuel through but the pump wasnt going to sustain any flow. any way as the defender appears to be a life long project ive ordered a new lift pump, glow plugs and cut off valve. the filters just been done. once ive fitted these there wont be much else to change apart from the owner. hopefully itll start and run for years. ( stop laughing ) all parts are Bearmach
 
For the price of a lift pump (cheap - even a good make) and the difficulty fitting (simple roadside job - even I can do it) it's not worth the hassle - just keep a spare in your toolbox. And if you have a spare to hand you can guarantee you will never need it.
