Hi all,just bought my first freelander and it has had a replacement head gasket/head skim and just wondered if there is anything else i should be checking for?ive seen mentioned about moving thermostat,new oil rail,flushing rad and using pink anti freeze???mines a 2000 1.8 so dont know if uprated thermostat/or been moved already?i saw someone had put 5mm hole in stat,is that a good idea?i just want to make sure everything will be fine so any help would be great,cheers
 
yeah cheers guys,but i couldnt afford afford a td4 or a other diesel with less than 1500000 on clock!!! Still after some usefull help please.........
 
Mines also a year 2000 1.8k and mine hasn't had the remote thermostat fitted yet. Not sure if i'll be bothering either.

Although i do recommend the new oil rail. It stiffens the block quite a bit.

Drilling the hole in the current stat isn't really advised as you can get a gush of cold water when it isn't needed causing unbalanced temperatures.

Have you had the steel dowels fitted with the head gasket? This is a very important upgrade if you don't want HGF again.

Red anti freeze (OAT) is recommended for the K series as it's kinder to the aluminium engine parts.

Most importantly don't go over 3000 RPM before the engines warm!
 
1) get the remote thermostat.
2) fit an EWP with after shutdown power.
3) get a new coolant tank with new cap.
3) fit a coolant low-level warning device.
4) ensure it is correctly filled with OAT antifreeze.

N.I... Would you recommend drilling the stat? I'd read a lot of different views on it, it seems more against than for.
 
small bypass to stop steam bubbles, personally a rover vitesse 2.0 turbo lump the way forward or

Have heard that some of the coolant additives like heater hotter or water wetter can make the coolant more efficient at conducting the heat away from the block to the radiator which might just be worth considering with a K-Series.
 
cant you people just speak english....what on earth is an EWP with after power whatever....and 'drilling the stat' what on gods earth is that all about. And ....why would anybody 'burn it' ...its probably cost as much as the o2 dome

I do, it's nothing new, Mini A series engines had the jiggle valve in the stat ring.

Plus MGF cup cars never had stat fitted (how they warmed the cars, I dunno), these engines didnt suffer hgf.......some Rover gurus say its because the engines were rebuilt on a regular basis. I dunno, I have my own theories, I emailed Techspeed who built the cup cars, never got a response, reckon its a race secret.

Normally yes, due to the horizontal position of the stat ring.

In the K-series the stat sits vertically and the jiggle valve (to allow air escaping) is now in the inlet manifold, returning coolant and air (hardly ever happens)

The purpose of drilling a stat in the K is to trickle coolant through the block while engine is warming up and coolant flow is in the small loop (heater matrix only), only when stat opens does it flow fully to the rad.

What after fitting a new head gasket?

Start saving for next time it goes (<20,000 miles if mine is anything to go by) :mad:
