After a 2 year gap, I finally have a defender again :D

this is only my 2nd defender, but it's still like finding your favourite old jumper at the back of the wardrobe after years of thinking it was lost :D

anyway, here she is:

she cost me £2285 in the end, which I was pretty happy with. It needs fettling, I'm not a greenlaner, and I want it for 95% road use really. I'll be looking to swap the rims for proper 750R16's with avon rangemasters. Does anyone think I'll be able to do a straight swap with someone, 5 rims & tyres for 5 rims and tyres? Also, have they invented tubeless 750R16's yet? The last landy I had used to go through inner tubes at a rate of knots co's of the ribbing that they mould onto the inside of the tyres these days.

It has that huge 'special vehicles' fitted winch too. I was wondering about offering it for sale, but don't really know if it's worth anything. I'd find it much more useful to have a PTO driven generator on the landy.

Well, all thoughts and comments welcome, and I look forward to picking your brains over the coming months and years. :D

Nice motor farmershort and looks like a good deal too :)

Cant help you with the standard tyres or rims but if they are BFG tyres with steel wheels (look like it in the ad) then you may find you can get a good price for them to put towards a standard set up.

Thanks for the pointer bobbler... they are indeed BFG tyres on steel. If nothing comes of this thread, I'll put them in the for sale/swap section.

The PTO winch is worth a fair bit if you want that sort of thing, look on fleabay for prices.
I'd stick with the wheels and tyres on it, they'll last you a long time and handle well on the road.

cheers patman, I've had a quick scour of flea bay... anything from £250 - £2000 depending on age and condition it seems. I've seen a fair few for between £500 - £1000, which suprised me. Not sure how easy it is to remove though, as it's a proper landy factory fit one - controls on top of the wing, and a fluid reservoir and compressor under the drivers seat.

As for the tyres... Dunno, they just dont feel 'right' to me... there feel a lot more wallowy going along the road than my old '92 on 750R16's. Mind you, I'm not sure if it's just that there's more play in the steering wheel - lots to be investigated! It apparently had the 'excessing steering play' sorted out yesterday at the garage, as it was one of the MOT advisories. The chap had both the advisories sorted before I bought it.

The link would appear to have your postcode on it. You might want to delete the link for security reasons, lots of Def's going missing at the mo :frown:

Thanks very much chap - excellent spot... I've hosted 'em on photobucket instead

Saw that on Autotrader the other day, looks noice :D I was a bit put off by the HDR pictures though, don't really see any need for them on an Autotrader ad!

Would have preferred it in the original colour, but still, good deal there by the looks of it :)

HDR?

yeah, I'd have probably preferred a nice finished to spray over, in an ideal world... but realisticly I wont have £1000 for a respray any time soon :)

I'm planning to kit the back out with a clever fold up double bed, which leaves a load of storage room under it. Other than than, I'll just get it generally protected and driving like new - i hope :)

HDR is a specialist type of picture that brings out the shadows and the highlights in a picture for a more even image, usually only done when you're trying to make pictures seem surreal or very vibrant. I was just wondering as to why he went to all that effort just for an old Land Rover on autotrader. Perhaps he was bored :D

Anyway, your plans sound good - keep us up to date with pictures etc, won't you? :D

if your old tyres had ribs on the inside then they were tubeless thats why they destroyed tubes, tube tyres are smooth inside
