Is it Really worth ####ing about unless you have all the stuff for free and a cheap co2 supply..... when you can get a hobbygas cylinder of argoshield filled for 40 quid and do the job right

I did only go down this route as I get the extinguishers for nothing and my reg was cheap. (and I didn't know any better!)

thats my point though. if you have the stuff to repurpose then fine.

but spending good money to end up with a mediocre solution seems madness when for slightly more you can have the real deal.

Yes I agree, just wanted to make it clear that while its a good cheap solution it's not the best. I wouldn't buy in the extinguishers. I'm interested in this 'co2 makes brittle welds' claim, my mate/teacher/father figure has used it for years, probably over 20, welding up all sorts from classic fords to hgv chassis. No problems yet. Or would this brittleness (is that a word?) only rear its head in an impact/collision?

If the weld is too brittle it will crack as soon as the welded piece is put into use, or before as it cools, which is why it is good practice to leave a small gap every so often when doing a run! Kind regards. Chris;)

Just disregard what I said, does not apply in this application of welding thin metal.

Proper argon co2 o2 mix gives a neat weld compared to co2. Co2 merely gives a bead that sits prouder from the piece. Thus argon mix looks better but is prob similar strength as co2

Just a further note on welds that are prone to crack! For even with excellent penetration! If there is any UNDERCUTTING on top , which is a groove on both or either sides of a weld, under STRESSED conditions the joint may crack! This applies to any thickness of metal being welded! Kind regards. Chris

Okay, lets talk about welding thick metal then. What do you call thick?

What causes welds to become brittle when welding thick metal?:

Improper joint design or root opening, different base metal to filler wire/rod( dissimilar metal) . Improper pre heat, inter pass temp and post heat. welding to low of heat setting, or using to much heat and burn the carbon or alloy out of base metal. Cooling of the steel to fast when finished. This is just for starters;)

Okay let me make it slightly more clear.

Why does using 100% CO2 when MIG welding cause brittle welds? What is it specifically that the CO2 does or doesn't do?
