Which way do I turn the viscous fan nut to undo it. ???

I've a spanner on it and tried a sharp knock turning the nut clockwise. Is this a left hand thread nut ??

Seen it been done with putting viscous fan spanner on and turn the engine over very quickly on and off with spanner resting on bottom crossmember should do it.

Yeah anticlockwise looking from the front. Give it a good smack with a hammer, if it's tight get a 10mm spanner one one of the bolts on the pulley to stop the pulley turning as you hit it :)

Do NOT do that under any circumstances, unless you want a spanner in your rad / bonnet / face.

Are you talking about a Discovery II TD5 or a Discovery I TDi 300?

I see on your profile pic it's a DII TD5 do it's anti-clockwise to undo.

I've alway put mine in gear first and then a short sharp tap with a hammer in the right direction, which is the wrong direction on my 300:)

if you hit hard each flat in its center in turn on the nut it will come off by hand once done enough with a decent hammer and flat ended punch 1/2 bar is fine

I use a strap wrench to hold the pulley still on my 300 then hit the vicous spanner clockwise with a rubber mallet and it usually does the trick.
