Hi I have a range rover P38 2.5dse auto diesel 1997. Its done approx 142000 miles.

The problem I am having is it ittermittantly vibrates, as in the engine sounds like its roaring and the whole car shakes.

It can sometimes start quite quickly other times I can drive for a while before it happens.

As I pull away it roars and the whole car shakes the more I accelerate it then stops. and when moving at different speeds if I put my foot down it will do the same but its not all the time.

I saw all these posts about U joints etc but when it starts doing this if I rev it when I am stopped it will also make the same roaring noise. So I would say it cancels anything like that as I am not moving.

I took it for a good drive the other week on the motorway and and since then it doesnt seem to be doing it quite as much, although I have done this in the past and it made no difference.

I am wondering if its the turbo as the roaring noise sounds like its trying to pull air in. The air filter is new and K&N,

any ideas or anything on the turbo I can check for blockages or leaks???

Thanks

Perhaps you have a bad weld at the collar from the exhaust pipe to manifold. When my went south it came and went a bit before it just went.

thanks for the replies, it sounds like and feels like when you put your foot down on the accelarator if your moving it drops down a gear but not enough.

As in if you were in a manual and your in the wrong gear when you try and accelerate, as long as the revs have not to low it will excelerate but the whole doesnt like it and begins to and the engine pitch changes as you can feel it having to work lot harder than it should for being in the wrong gear. lifting foot of accelarator stops the vibration

As say there is no real lose of power I haved towed with it doing it and its still be fine power wise.

But as say when at a stand still you hold your foot on the accelerator and the engine sound is still there. turn the engine off and then on again and its back to normal.

Which is why I think its turbo or air flow related

oops that was supposed to be "begins to vibrate!"

anti vibration pulley on the crank they break down and vibrate and rattle they also quieten out when the revs rise

just for anyones info, Datatek you were right it was the viscous fan, it finaly snapped of the water pump and went through my radiator. The steel shaft from the pump looked like the metal was rather brittle.

So had to fit new radiator, new pump, two belts and a whole viscous fan. about £300 in total, but the good news is its stopped vibrating!!
