final stupid question ( well for now....)

have seen loads of places now that offer servicing for air con.

Have never had mine serviced in the ten years Ive had it- so question -

1) waste of time & money not necessary ?

2) about to kill the car if i dont get it looked at asap

3) be a good idea but it can wait til i can save up

Ah've heard that if ye don't run it at least once a week, then it can harbour all sorts o' nasty germs!

air con is a gas R134A if it runs out which it will after time you can recharge it yourself pay someone else to do it or leave it like many many cars around

cant time and drink fast enough, its like the stuff in your fridge, its very good at expanding (get cold) and contracting (get warm) could go into more detail but the drink/typing ratio will be very unbalanced

Just out of interest....

The water you're topping up regularly, you're not on about the washer bottle are you???

given my fantastic track record with the water and anti freeze think it is highly unlikely that I would ever recharge it myself-dont you-:)

It hasnt run out over ten years - use it a fair bit each summer so how long is it meant to last ?

Have got two maintenance tasks sorted- know where to put the oil and check the level- just dont do it very often ( once a year )

Also know where to put water and screen wash to clean windows- thats an easier one as it runs out and so it acts as a reminder to fill it up again

so no its not the washer bottle:p

also put of interest
has the gearbox, diffs or transfer box ever been checked?

if they do it in a service then yes- if not then no :(

Im on my third gearbox so guess they check it each time it breaks

if the vehicle is old enough it could have been charged with R12 in which case it would need retrofitting with different seals as i believe R134a attacks the seals fritted to R12 vehicles, you can no longer use R12 as it is a CFC and will kill the entire world!! if released into the air ( causes the hole in the ozone layer )

when re-gassing aircon the operator should drain down the system and pull a vacuum on the system to unsure no gas is left in the system and there are no leaks, the system should be re-gassed and should have the correct grade PAG oil injected into the gas stream as this is what lubricates the compressor, failure to do this could cause the compressor to seize, alot of the mobile cheap re-gassers don't know how to do this let alone carry the kit to do it! the aircon service machine that i was trained on by VAG group cost in the region of £1800

also any time the system is opened (hose replaced etc) the dryer should be changed this is because the moisture in the air collects in the system and turns to ice when the gas expands in the evaporator damaging the evaporator and if it gets to it the compressor

G-Man has just proved to me that he is fluent in car speak- down side to that is that it sound remarkably similar to martian which is as yet untranslatable into english and is therfore uncomprehensible :)

think a quick walk around the landy with a mechanic/friend/some one who knows there way round a engine is in order, before any more gearboxes and other things need changing

Nope...G-Man has proved that it is possible to copy and paste from google.

bollocks i typed that all me self! i has certificates somewhere that says i is qualified to work on automotive aircon (issued by VAG) did enough of their fookin courses if i hadnt had left where i was working at the time i would be a master tech by now!
