This is a weird one!

Setting the valve clearances on my S3 diesel, all ok except one - valve no.2.

To set the clearance the nut is right on the edge of the thread, almost as if the pushrod isn't long enough!

Any ideas?

Bent pushrod?
Valve not seating fully (bent valve head) ?
Lump missing off the cam lobe?
Damaged follower?

Take the ticket head off you may see a bent rod.
Then Lift the rockers first. Look at the pushrods.
Check the height of the valves & straightness.
Then if still no joy off with the head.

Agreed, and the problem with a bent rod it they only get bent when the valve hits the piston so the head still has to come off. I had this once on another type of engine and the follower had a brazed on stellite face, it had come off.

Earlier I removed a follower from my spare block, just in case. I don't think I have any spare push rods sadly!

But I'll have to wait until this evening to look at what's going on, I'm just hoping it's not the cam shaft, as everything else should. hopefully. be easier to fix!

I find adjusting the clearances alters very little. I’ve spent hours stanly knifing feeler gauges apart and hammering them into the gap in the tappets.
Never done me any good.
