I am trying to install the EAS Unlock software (Bought from Ebay with a USB to Serial Cable), which it states will work with Vista. However, the installer for the driver that comes on the disc won't work, I get a 'Driver Install Failure' when pressing the install button.

I've got the latest updates from Microsoft
I've downloaded another version of the installer from the web site of the company I bought it from
I've let the OS try and update the driver automatically, but it can't find a solution
I've spoken to the company I bought it from, and his answer is 'We've sold hundreds, it must be your computer'

I know there are loads of threads on here about runnings this software, and a few comments regarding people loading a driver for Vista, but none point to which one to use. Anyone any help/advice, before I just send this stuff back and buy one of the other options?

i had this problem go into device manager right click on the usb that you are trying to install driver for and click on update driver this worked on one off my laptops running vista but would not work on my other one also running vista but when i install xp worked staight away I thing the software you have got is for XP so i keep my one with XP on it to do all work on my RR hope this helps you

Hi, thanks, but I tried updating the driver via the control panel first, no luck I'm afraid :(

Another Vista casualty:mad: Once it thinks the device is there, it's very difficult to overcome an error situation. Try uninstalling the driver and then reinstalling and updating the driver before you plug the device in.
Otherwise get a cardbus serial adaptor.

It's annoying that it's listed as working with Vista, when it doesn't. The driver installer throws up an error as in my first post, but tried unistall etc. to no avail. The pain of it is if I'd realised it would be more straight forward with the cardbus serial adaptor I'd have just bought one at the same time and not wasted hours trying to resolve the driver issue....

Anyway, thanks for the comment, looks like I'll need to order one.

Vista is an American word for **** and 7 is not much better, long live XP:)

Tell me about it, done it twice now. Would like to buy a new laptop but not with windows 7:( I stayed with 95 for a long time as 98, 2000 were pretty poor. XP was a big improvement if not as good as it should be, much slower than 95, memory hungry, but fairly reliable and with some useful new features. Vista = a quantum leap backwards in almost every respect, 7 = Vista with some of the problems resolved:mad:
 
Just to advise on my experiences using this type of connector. Im using a notebook with Windows 7 and installed the drivers, but could not see the device at the end of the cable. Im using a Faultmate MSV2 Extreme , howver the problem is not with the device, but with the adaptor.

I installed the latest driver etc but same problem.

Discovered the problem relates to the bit rate exchange between the extreme server and the converter. The extreme server works at 57600 bits per second, while the default rate for the converter is 9600. Once I changed the bits per second on the port settings to 57600 problem was resolved.

USB normally sorts these problems out automatically, however the USB to serial does not seem to resolve the problem. Once set cable works perfectly.

Might be worth a try.

Thank you. Any pointers on how to change the bit rate? Sorry, not something I've ever had to do.
 
I dont know the answer to your issue,but I have Vista with a prolific convertor(with latest drivers) and have no problems with the EAS software or my MSV.
 
Just a quick update:

Went to Maplins and bought a USB to Serial Cable from them, which worked first time out of the box! :)

I guess the moral here is that the cheap generic cables sold maybe have some issue, not technical enough to understand what that might be, but mine came from Taw 4X4 via ebay. They were also less than helpful when I spoke to them (We're a garage, how would we know, must be you're computer), and still haven't ansered my emails to them asking who the manufacturer of the cable was so I might find the driver.

Still haven't solved everything, as I can't get the EAS Unlock to go to good idle yet (All 20's and 80's for the moment), but at least the damn cable works. So, £45 in, it's looking like the ready made devices that just plug in and fix it are pretty good value (Moral number 2! :)). Looking forward to giving the EAS system a good overhaul now the better weather is here, once I get some time, in the meantime, thanks to everyone for their help.
